292 power steering setup

I have a 56 ford f100 with a 292 and recenly installed a power steering rack and pinion. I am looking for information on what pump, hoses, pulleys and brackets to use. The damper and water pump pulleys only have one groove for the generator. I have a feeling i will have to fabricate my own brackets.

Deep in my junk pile, I may have the cast iron pulley that Ford used on Y-blocks to give a second pulley in front of the one that drives the generator & water pump. It bolts onto the damper and the damper bolt goes through it, so you may need a longer bolt. (The pump in that era was driven by a belt that was directly off the front crank pulley, so you do not need to involve your water pump.)

If you're interested, PM me and I'll look for it. (Don't get too excited until I find it as I may not have it any more.)

PS setup

Get Archie's pulley or one like it off ePay. I used that plus the brackets and a Saginaw pump from ND Gearhead Cruisers for my Y-block car with Cavalier rack. Works like a top.

Cast iron pulley

At this point i would be interested if you can find it. What would you be asking for it?The information i have gathered tells me this pulley was probably used on cars with power steering from 57 to early 60's with a Y block. I appreciate the help.

No luck so far, but I have not given up. (It would be nice if I was more organized.) I did find a double-pulley version that is similar, but there are no Ford numbers on it. It does not match the bolt-holes on my FE dampers and has three holes (in addition to the central hole). Please check your damper and see if it has two holes or three. If it is three, measure the distance between any two holes, center-to-center & I'll see if the one I found will work for you. Meanwhile, I will keep looking.

I'm noodling on exactly the same thing, but Arch, I cant seem to follow along with your response. You are talking about a double pulley for the water pump to take off for the PS? I saw a $200 billet alum job at Mid Fifty that I think is the right idea.
Does anyone have a pix?
My crank pulley has 2 grooves, but taking off from either of them to a PS pump looks like its gonna nail the radiator hose.

Midnite Cruiser,

f1crusier and I did some PM's and so let me fill you in. I never found my 292 pulley, but my memory tells me that it should have two holes. f1crusier confirmed that the desired pulley had two holes instead of three - my double pulley is probably a FE pulley, which fits a different harmonic balancer than the one I have. (I have parted out many engines.)

You are right in not following, the part I had was a cast-iron crank pulley, but not for a Y-block, so it does not make sense.

Stock 292's drove the PS pump only from a single pulley that bolted on front of the pulley that drove the water pump & generator. I had two, but cannot find them. I will post back if they turn up.

Archie
You are correct.
( Stock 292's drove the PS pump only from a single pulley that bolted on front of the pulley that drove the water pump & generator. )
I don't have the pump mounted yet but if mounted correctly the belt is close to the radiator hose but does clear it. Visit ( ndgearheadscruiserproductd.com ) They have a picture of their bracket with the pump mounted.

new toysteer setup

Just finished the Toysteer conversion. THE largest driving difference yet- no slop, good, not-overboosted feel.
I got lucky and found a '56 Fairlane with PS. Unbeleivably, it was full of good fluid from wayback. Got all the brackets and pump. Check the gallery out. VERY clean.
Although the water pump pulley was the stock setup, look at the accessory drive photo- a new pulley was made to drive the pump with the large belt from the fan, from the front crank groove (wish the area in between the inner and outer crank belt grooves was machined to give a third belt spot.

Now if I could just figure a way to get the horn wire back to the stock button some way..............

The original Y block P/S pump pulley was a three spoke type, not a solid pulley. From 1954 thru 1964, all the Ford/Mercs/Lincolns used the Eaton pump. The can type reservoir mounts above the pump. Four different lids were used, one had a cap only, one had a dipstick mounted flush with the lid, one had a standpipe where the dipstick went, one had no dipstick at all, the lid had to be removed to check the fluid level.

The Eaton pumps were used on all 1954/64 cars, and Mustangs made before 8/23/64. There are two types, the one for the 6's, small blocks (221/260/289) and Y blocks to 312 ci = 900-3A674 and the ones used on FE and the larger 317/383/430 engines = 1100-3A674. The numbers 900 & 1100 are stamped on a large bolt head mounted on the pumps.

WOW - that is some nice truck! I like the valve covers - I had a set of them on my '56 Vicky. I also like those rams-horn exhaust manifolds. As I remember, they have a distinct sound and look & work great too.

I think you could rig a slip-ring for the horn if you are still using the hollow stock steering shaft. I can't see enough in your pic - how are you hooking up to the box?

Arch and I have PM'ed some about "slip ring" ideas to get the stock horn to work via a wire back in the hollow stock shaft. Will post if we ever get to it (there is an F100 disc conversion and the Mustang coming apart)

Bill is quite the resource on that pump part history! THis '56 version I have has the dipstick. I never thought the one on my '64 Stang could be the same, but it does have the same big round resevior (different cap- and I think there is a nipple off it down to the trans- I have not dismantled that far.

And the good news is, you only have to buy one spare power steering pump seal kit!

C2SZ-3B584-A .. P/S Pump Seal Kit~Fits Eaton 900 & 1100 Pumps.
