When I try to keep coolant up to the "cold" line on the coolant recovery tank I see leaks around some hoses and apparently the plastic end cap on the radiator the next morning. I also find some antifreeze spots in the driveway. If I just let it go and don't add any then the leaks go away. Keep in mind the radiator is always totally full. Could it be that somehow too much coolant is being sucked from the tank when the engine cools down? All coolant levels are checked with the engine dead cold before starting up!!! The leaks are around hose clamps and the radiator. The recovery tank is not leaking. This is a 96 f250 with a 7.5 gas. The recovery tank is not a pressurized tank like on later models. How does this system work? When does the radiator pull coolant back from the recovery tank?
Again, there are no leaks in the recovery tank or its hoses. All leaks are to the radiator and the hoses associated with it. Also when I remove the radiator cap (engine dead cold in the morning) antifreeze comes rushing out like the radiator is overfilled.
KRB, sorry I may not have the answer, but I have the same problem as you do and I thought that I have noticed when it happens most often. When I run the truck hard. Seems like if I drive it like I stole it, then she will overflow the coolant and make the mess under the hood, not to mention the hot coolant most likely is the cause of the air filter restriction gauge breaking apart all by itself the other day. I can keep the fluid level up to even the upper mark as long as I drive the truck like a little old lady, but sorry, I didn't do the mods to nurse this thing around town. She likes to leap like a frog from signal to signal, leaving little chirps here and there.
