i got a replacement distributor...from a 83 (i have an 85) and the shaft is like 1/2 inch shorter on the replacement...anyone else encounter this? will it still work w. the oil pump shaft? part numbers are the same for the 80's oil pumps and oil pump shafts so i'm assuming it will work...all of the replacements are like this. lemme know if anybody's noticed this
I can't say for sure, but it will probably work, since I have not heard of different length dist for a 302. But, just to make sure, take something blunt like a wooden rod, slip it down in the dist hole and let it rest on top of the oil pump drive shaft. Mark the spot even with the top of the block were the wooden dowel comes out of the hole.
Then take the wooden dowel rod and hold it along side of the new dist. Line the mark up with the flange on the dist were it sits on the block. Hopefully the other end of the wooden dowel is shorter than the bottom of the dist. How much shorter will tell you how much the oil pump drive will stick up into the end of the dist shaft.
