marbles in converter

I looked up all ways in the search about the marble noises in the converter. I for some reason remember a cure to the noise without replacing the converter. I am presently trying to trade the old girl in and not one dealer wants the truck with all that noise or they offer a very low price with the response they have to replace the transmission. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Gut the cat, or better yet, cut it out and straight pipe it if you can where you are. It will run and sound better.

Gunnar, i am going to lay money down ($5) that you have an early 99 truck? The fix is a new revised (not cracked LOL) flexplate that you swap out. It is kind of like the Flywheel, it connects the crankshaft to the torque converter.

The noise is in the converter because it goes away as you go off idle rpm . The Ford dealer checked the flex plate and bolts and said they were ok (without taking out the trans.) I thought there was some switch or bypass that eliminated the chatter at idle with these trans. I forgot this is a early 99 f250 sd cc 4wd psd

I think what you are looking for is a friction additive that they put into the transmission fluid.. I tried this with my 99 but it didn't quite it any..

You can throw a new converter in for $1000.00 but it would probably not raise the trade in price..

Probably best to just take the best offer and run...

dont think friction add. will do anything, from what iv been told that noise is the splines of the converter dragging on the input shaft. glad i got a warranty when i bought it in july, took it in and all was covered, just had the $100 dedutable and i didnt even have to pay all that. the shop tryed to convince the insurance Co to put in a whole new tranny for fear of metal shavings, but they opted for a new converter an said to come back when the tranny goes...stupid insur. co. tryen to save $$ now when they may have to pay for labor twice if the tranny goes. but shop said tranny looked very clean, so im not worried.

I got a killer deal for new Ford converter installed for $375. Every one else wanted 800 to 1000 to do it. The only cure is a new TC

My early 99 (Oct 98 build) sounded the same way, I took mine in while still under warranty and had the TSB done, and got the new revised torque converter. I was told by the tech that the noise was due to some springs rattling around in there when there was no load on the TC, and that the noise really didn't mean reduced performance.

Copy of TSB:

99-3-5 - Noisy T/C*

Problem - Some 1999 F-series with the 4R100 transmission may exhibit a rattle/scraping noise in the converter housing area of the transmission case.

Action - To diagnose, place gear selector in park and using a break out box, ground pin 54 (TCC). This will fully apply the torque converter clutch. Cycle the torque converter clutch on and off a few times by applying and removing the ground to pin 54. If the rattle/scraping noise is not present when the converter clutch is applied (pin 54 grounded), replace torque converter.

Affected Vehicles - 1999 F-Series Super Duty, 7.3 DIT, 4R100 and 1998-1999 E-Series built after 1/5/98. Some 1999 F-series 250HD/350/450/550 Super Duty and 1998/1999 Econoline Series (built after 1/5/98) and equipped with 7.3l diesel

Parts - Updated Converter: XL3Z-7902-DARM
