I'm looking at purchasing a 2003 F150 Supercrew 4wd and wondering what experience everyone has had? How many miles are the newer Fords good for? Anything to watch out for? Thanks for any help. It is a 5.4 engine.
Well I've got an 01 and it has been a very good truck. The engines when properly maintained will go over 200,000 miles easy. The tranny's are good too as long as you change the fluid every 50,000 to 60,000 miles.
Can you find out any history on it?
How many miles on it?
Check to make sure the 4X4 works ok and check the front end for worn tie rod ends and ball joints etc.
I always feel that paying a shop an hour or so to have a vehicle checked out is a worthwhile investment.
I requested that info, but haven't received anything yet. The miles are 73k. I'm glad you mentioned the tie rods and ball joints. I heard these used to be pretty expensive to replace on these trucks. Are they still really expensive or was what I heard BS?
I'm not familiar with Ford's 4wd system, so please tell me what to look for as far as wear items and how the 4wd is supposed to engage.
Ball joints can run you around $450 in parts alone, plus anywhere from $300-800 in labor (depending who does it for you). I had two quotes on mine, one was $1200 the other was $800. Both were just ball joints, upper and lower.
