No problem, they should be exactly the same. Ford used basically the same distributor for virtually all models for several years, just adapted to fit the different engines.

All Ford single point sets are interchangeable between the various engines. You'll be happier with a Pertronix or Crane XR-1 though. You'll find out after installing the points, fighting to get them set right (not just the gap that you set but the dwell angle too, you'll also need to buy a dwell meter for this) then swap in a Pertronix or Crane XR-1 and you'll be amazed. (and kicking yourself for not doing it to start with)

now I am starting to wonder. Is there much difference in the cap and rotor. I think the parts guy gave me a cap and rotor for a non point system. He just asked if I had a vacuum advance and decided the cap and rotor for me. It is a small grey one.

Cap and rotor are the same for either. The best setup is the later, early 80's with a cap adapter that adapts the large post type cap to the older points type distributor. These can be bought at any parts house, often times with the cap. The best caps will have brass terminals instead of aluminum. The aluminums develop a black corrosion from the spark jumping the gap between the rotor and cap. I use this combo with Ford Racing's 9mm wire sets and they last well over a year in daily driving.

None for a 69 Mustang 351W? They should be the same for any V8 ford distributor I believe.
