OK, it's FE related because my only carbed engines are FEs, and I don't see Bear 45/70 post in the carb forum.
Anyway, how long has Holley been putting plastic bushings on the 4160 secondary shafts? I have not been through the one that came on my truck for at least 12 years, now I'm going through the junkyard carbs and seeing things I don't remember from the mid '70s carb.
I'm sure I'll be asking more useless trivia questions as this project continues. What brand of chem-dip is everyone using? I have a 6 to 8 year old can of Berryman's, just bought a can of Gunk brand; totally different. Is it the difference between brands, or have all brands been re-formulated?
Carb dip aint carb dip no more, at least here in Cali. It's not the dip I recall from highschool. The one that actually cleaned stuff off just soaking the carb. Dont know what the difference is but if youhave a can of the real stuff.. have a look at the formula listed on the can. Would be nice to know what the old stuff had vs new.
I started on the old carb tonight, plastic bushings were there. The carb has a D5** engineering number.
I looked over the new can briefly: "Environmentally friendly". The old stuff still has some kick, makes the Nitrile gloves pucker in mere seconds. LOL Between the two I'm getting acceptable results.
The EPA mandated changes to carb cleaners and every other solvent we used to protect us from ourselves, I was aware I had asked them to protect me? It was in the seventies when Holley when to the plastic bushings on throttle shafts, but I can't tell you the exact year. Before the plastic bushings, when the carb got worn shaft bores it was a major hassle to either bush them or O-ring them to stop the air leaks and sticking throttles.
