LOL...no matter the why...if we knew what could help change it (we should be smarter than the last ice age creatures), shouldn't we look at what to do. One thing to note, which ever side of the political fence you are on, does not change that it is happening, and is far from junk science. But then you must remember that science by nature is not exact, and is really theory that must be explained as true or not. Enough credible people have come out and supported the evidence. However, not driving an SUV is not the real issue, but one that hits some people, because they drive them (lol, as do I...well F150). It really is not a political ploy or issue that someone just brought up, but could be a human problem if everyone treats it as inevitable. It really does not take drastic temperature changes to shift the local climate (one way or the other, warming is not the best term for it). The amount of carbon released into the atmosphere provides an extra bit of insulation, and makes it hard for the heat to be refleced back. The ice caps actually do this. it takes rising water temps to melt the ice in that floats in the ocean. It also can slow the ocean conveyer that transfers the warm water to cold. When that slows enough or stops, then the next ice age will hit. Several other factors can play as well,, the rain forrests get more arid, and the deserts become more green. That is not good, as sand is actually a major player in feeding and reduction of sea storms. There ar islands that are worried, as their shorelines have gotten smaller. But then most of will be gone, so we can just let someone else worry...LOL

remember that at one time they used to blood let to get all kinds of ailments cured....but we know different now right....not such a stretch to at least look into the prolem and see what we could do to change it...then if it is true, fix it, and if it isn't, live with it....my 2 cents, plus some

Several people have noted that governments perpetuate their power by keeping people constantly alarmed with a series of crises and posing themselves as the answer. That includes the U.N. The climate and sea levels apparently have fluctuated over long periods of time.
The gobal warming advocates would be more believable if they would produce more long-term temperature data from specific locations. Also, there should be some very old pictures of a harbor or a very old measuring stick from that harbor to show rising sea levels. Science is not about consensus or generalities, it's about measurement data and proof.

Rick the Biggest problem IMO is that people are MORE emotional than they are scientific.

I read the "letters to the editor" of several newspapers everyday and I swear...very few people took science in school and learned anything about Earth in general ...and the solar system.

Like I say: " Only humans are arrogant enough to believe they cause super-natural events"

There are at least 5 active threads about global warming on FTE on now chaulk full of info that disputes Humans causing these chnages

see the one in the GAD forum.

What makes the warming seem more dramatic is that there is a synergistic effect; the warmer it gets, the faster it gets warm and that is also natural. Snow is white and reflects light as well as infrared heat. The less snow and ice there is covering the earth, the faster everything warms up.

I can only speculate as to what causes the first steps toward the cooling cycle. If I had to guess, I'd say that the oceans warm enough to cause very high moisture levels during the winters that cause huge snow falls over the land, thus beginning the light reflecting and cooling cycle which is also synergistic and perpetuates itself into an ice age. In effect nature is returning the water from the seas back onto the land and lowering the sea levels.

Nature takes care of itself.

I believe so.

Up until a little while ago I was an environmental driller, drilling into the earth with an auger based drill for the purpose of pulling up soil samples. I've always been fascinated by geology but the things I saw coming out of the ground were sometimes amazing. Drilling into beach sand that is covered by 20 - 30 feet of glacial clay deposit. AFAIK, sand is formed by eroding mountains and moved by running water, and so essentially, is clay and silt.

Finding a layer of 'river rock', the 3" - 6" rounded stones is also interesting, especially when there's no particular evidence of water ever existing, considering that it takes millenia of running water to erode those stones to their round shape.

The perfect example of 'where water has been' is the Grand canyon. The first example 'lies' in the layers of sedimentary rock, which were deposited by by water; the second example is the Colorado river which eroded the canyon itself, and still flows through the canyon. A similar, smaller example is the Red Deer river which flows through Drumheller.

Anybody remember the global cooling scam that went on some years ago and made some politicians and insurance companys rich. Its happening again, it gonna drive up costs and everyone involed is gonna get rich like the the last one. Ale gore is already getting there as he buys his corbon offsets and drives up his stock.

Is the earth warming up? Sure. Are we a major contributing factor? I am doubtful. I am with many of the others here. I maintain that Mother Nature has been playing with the thermostat on this planet for a number of years that is really quite unimaginable to mankind. Not only that, but there are a numerous reports that show that naturally occurring emissions from things like volcanoes dwarf the amount "bad" chemicals that some folks claim we are poisoning the atmosphere with.

There are a lot of things that bug me about this. If we are so damned "all knowing," how come weather people can't get a stupid 24-hour forecast right with any consistency?!? Why are we still setting record highs & record lows? If we've seen soooo much, why haven't we already set all of these record highs & lows?!? If global warming is so bad, why did Denver get three blizzards in a row & a record amount of snow fall in December?!? Hell, why did that section of NY get over 100" of snow?!?

But, then again what do I know?!? /shrug

I highly doubt that we, as people, have a big effect on this planet. Humans cannot control mother nature.

I have about 40 years tops to live, and I really dont see the earth becoming a huge smog cloud with temperatures comparable to Venus. Once I die...I could care less what happens to this planet.

I was sitting here, and there was a lull in the usual humdrum of work. So, I bounced over to the web browser & hit my Goggle homepage. One of the first links on it was entitled, "Scientists Threatened For "Climate Denial"

I don't think anyone here is not concerned for things that are close to us and can be changed.

But, we can't fool with what this Massive Planet spinning and revolving and tilting on its axis On its Own unless you have super powers to go out in space and change those parameters,

Maybe change the rotation of the earth to the opposition direction.
Maybe reduce the amount of earths water content from 85% to 40%
Maybe stop volcanic action
Maybe put a stop to lightning strikes that create forest fires.

Real things people can do.

Reduce driving their vehicles and still not change anything in the atmosphere because the situation it is Bigger than Human thinking (arrogance believing they caused it)

You want to clean up the planet from a human perspective ?

These are already being done.

1) Recycle everything possible and keep things from going to landfills and permeating the ground water.

2) Cut down on chemical use on farms and food sources

3) Put forest fires out (but only after weeks of burning)

4) Plant trees & compost everything can be.

5) Protect watersheds

6) Conserve water

7) Conserve electric energy

8) Conserve Oil

9) Conserve Lumber

10) Conserve Fuel

11) Harness wind Power

12) Harness sunlight power

13) Stop burning as much coal as before

etc etc.

Yet the situation doesn't and Won't really change things about
"The Planetary Environment"

because it is Bigger than all of us put together.

I actually looked for some info on that before I posted on this thread but I didn't really find much, despite hearing on the news last week, that a bunch of scientists were reversing their stance on the global warming topic.

That article explains why I couldn't find anything.
