I have a 2000 v10 excursion that has 108000miles and is in need of new shocks. Ive heard that the stock shocks are pretty soft, so i wanted to go with something slightly stiffer since i haul trailers and with my current setup the back end really squats bad. Also, this may be a dumb question, but i cant do anything about height with just shocks right? What would you guys recommend that wont break the bank? All help is appreciated.
I 3rd that idea. They are priced right for what you are looking for. Don't forget to change that steering stabelizer also.
I totally agree (see my signature of my conservative modifications)....I could not find Bilstein steering stabilizers so I went with Rancho...bolted right onto the existing mount. Did I tell you I went through 3 factory stabilizers?? What a difference!! Steering feels more purposeful as opposed to just wandering around the lane.
I 4th that,,,,,,, and make sure on the stabilizer, it is a steering dampner, they are built to be equal valving both ways, had a friend who got a shock INSTEAD from somewhere,,,, turned really nice to the right, hard as he!! to the left, took me about 2 corners,,,, of course I knew he had just put shocks and dampner on.

Shocks wont do anything for "squat". You'll need springs (add-a-leaf or a new spring pack) or airbags. A weight distributing hitch should help with squatting, too.
108K on stock shocks?? Heck, ANYTHING will be better! Some folks rave about their (much cheaper priced) Monroes!
all 4 of my stock shocks were completely blown at 50K miles, all tarmac miles. You don't have shocks anymore, they're just placeholders so you know where to mount new shocks :-).
Ok,, I just bought factory Motorcraft from Ford and installed factory replacments. I have had some really bad luck buying aftermarket shocks. If you want a stiff ride,, you might just get what you want in aftermarket. But I still have to drive mine for hours at a time, I am ok with a "softer ride" when I want a firm ride I will drive my Corvette on the track. Jim
I'm still waffling on the choice of replacement shock. Right now my '03 6.0 4x4 X has got 120000km (~75000miles) on factory shocks & springs. The ride is way too rough on the front seat, and chatters teeth in the back seat. I also have a clunking in the front, even on small bumps at just the right speed. Will replacing the shocks actually help the rough ride? I thought the shocks would just keep the vehicle from bouncing like a rubber ball after a bump. If shocks would help soften and smooth the ride, which shock (Bilstein, factory...) would give the softest ride?
I'm pretty sure the steering stabilizer is also shot as the wandering and pothole grabbing has gotten noticeably worse. Anyone got a preferred make, part number, and source?
Replacing the shocks with the "correct" shock will return the ride to a softer setting. I have been lured in one time to many buying ,, "heavy duty performance" shocks and having a vehicle that would bounce over bumps and jar teeth. This is why I use factory replacement shocks. They aren't the cure all but they do return the vehicle to the factory specs that is was build under. Jim
Thanks for all of your help, and i thought the same thing you guys did when you said that at 108k miles you dont have functional shocks anymore, but the dealer said that they shocks were fine, and you would think they would be the first people to tell you if you "need" something.
I just did the shocks on my 01 and it was a noticable difference. The issue is that the truck still bottoms out a lot so I think I'm going to go with the F350 front springs to try to alleviate that. How Ford finds 2" of suspension travel on a 4 ton vehicle acceptable is beyond me.
FWIW, the steering dampener made the biggest difference. No longer does the steering wheel jerk going over bumps and the 70 - 80mph wobble is gone.
I've got the same vehicle as you V10, 108000 mi. I replaced mine with KYB gas-adjust shocks, a lot cheaper than Bilsteins. Cost was a substantial issue when I needed to do the project. I'm satisfied.
I wanted Rancho's but they don't make an application of the RS-5000 for the rear of a 2wd. You'll need to 'bag or re-spring the rear to deal with the 'squat'.
