For all the head scratching, cutting, welding, and knuckle busting to get a 390 into my 85 F-150, the truck is finally completely together.
The truck has "ran" for a couple days, but just if I shot ether down the carb. Today I finally got a fuelling issue sorted out and I tell you what, it was worth all of the work.
Just cranking the truck it makes 60-70 PSI for oil and once it fires it idles at 85 PSI cold with 30W oil. Got the carb and the timing all set, so now it's all ready for it's maiden voyage tomorrow
I still need to finish my hydraulic clutch bracket, but everything else is together and going, so I'm figuring by lunch tomorrow I should be cruising the town
When I bump the throttle it throws the passengers side of the truck down a solid 2" with heavy coils, i think it's going to be a fun ride
The truck ran and drove today, but I have the classic autolite 4300 sticking secondaries syndrome. Just need to take it off and get it all cleaned up.
I haven't gotten into the throttle really heavy yet, but for what i have IT GOES. I need to get a tach in there now, but it's a fun ride
After the secondaries stuck open I hopped out, closed them, and then flipped the secondary lock on. Running on just the primaries the truck feels like the fastest 80-96 F-150 I've ever driven (300, a 302 FI and a 302 carb)
wasn't running it on ether, just starting it. It would feed off of the fuel that was in the bowl, but then the bowl would run dry and the truck would stall.
Got a new fuel pump on it and everything's good as gold.
great! sounds fun! I seized a engine once by running it on ether, seems to dry it out too much and rings stick to wall.
If you look at most "starting fluid" on the shelf these days, it says something about lubricating the cylinders... it's not just "ether" anymore, they put something else in it too - MMO?
Allright, project sidelined. The truck is an exhaust away from being totally done, but i had a bit of a mishap yesterday. I was helping a friend out with his car when a radiator hose popped at operating temp and dumped down my arm.
All and all i'm fine, just real tender right now so I don't see myself sticking my arm up where it could be rubbing against greasy frame rail any time in the next couple of days. I'd also just tracked down a vacuum leak and got the truck all tuned in and ready for a run Staying parked for another couple days won't hurt it.
