I got her

I posted a thread a little below about if this was a good deal, and it got even sweeter. For background, I was looking at a 99 Ranger, 3.0, auto, 2wd, single cab short bed, 72k, for $4000. I got to talking to the guy, and he just bought a Yamaha R6 bike, and really still needed a truck, but he wanted a old truck. So I swapped him my 87 for the 99 Ranger, plus $2000.

Score!

So here is my question: the A/C and heat only blow out of the defrost vents. This I am told is either a vaccum line or a switch. Where are said line or switch and how do I test them? Thanks!

Under the air filter box you will find an odd looking black ball maybe 4-5" diameter, with several vacuum lines running to/from it. It is a vacuum reservoir and one of the lines goes through the firewall to the heater control mechanism. Often, this ball gets damaged and leaks, or one of the lines comes off, etc. Start there and see if you have vacuum into the cab and to the control.

How did I check it for vacuum, with out special tools. I'm not at school because of spring break, so I don't have access to the amazing tool room we have there.

A vacuum gauge. Most auto stores will let you borrow/rent one. Look for cracked lines coming off of the reservoir or the vacuum tree on the intake manifold.

Ahh, okay. Thats what I've used at school, though I didn't know they let you borrow them at places like Autozone. I'll check it out.
