pulling codes

The light comes on before I start it. Since I cleaned the MAF and the valve by the thorotle body the cold wanting to stall prob. is gone and I noticed a sound and power difference(not so loud when I give it gas and pulls the mountain much better) but the gas milage is not better. can this thing still get codes in the computer with out the check engine light comming on?
