I am thinking about buying a 79 bronco for a wheeling rig. Its got a 351M. I don't know much about these engines. I was searching around some but didn't see what i was looking for. Can you buy rebuild kits for these engines ? Is this bronco worth while or is there not much potential with this motor ?
Speaking as one who just bought a 79 Bronco, it is well worth it. If you're looking for a motor upgrade as I have been, it's not expensive when you know what to look for. The 351M can be upgraded to a 400 by just changing the crank and pistons, I'm not completely disappointed with my 351M, it has plenty of torque. The only reason I am looking to upgrade, is that I have a rod knocking now, and since the engine will have to come out anyway, I might as well go ahead and change that stuff out. I'm sure you'll read more about the rarity of these 78-79 Broncos, but aside from that , they are a beast of a truck. Buy it and have some fun!
These motors are really overlooked. With the right upgrades and switching it to a 400 you can really get some kick out of them. Yes, you can get rebuild kits for them at Northern Auto parts for about $300, it comes with new pistons, rings, cam, lifters, timing components, oil pump, all bearings, frost plugs, and gaskets, and you can upgrade components to better brands if needed. But, if you did that and upgraded the cam for a better after market one stuck on a performer manifold, holley or edelbrock 4 barrel carb, headers and dual exhaust and maybe some different heads you will have a real beast. If you go to this website it shows you how to build a more powerful one than a crate motor for less than a crate motor, http://www.projectbronco.com/Technical_Articles/351m400_performance_build_up.htm.
Hope this helps.
This all started when me and a friend were talking about my 88 ranger project and he said that 78-79 bronco's are the perfect off-road trucks, and that he really wants to get one for his next project. Until then I had never heard of a 351M. I started looking and thinking maybe it should be my next project. I found one for sale for $1,000.
It really does sound like its got everything going for it all the way around. Solid axle up front, ford 9" in the Rear, C6 auto. I kind of wish I would have know all this before I bought the 88 ranger.
The harness is a modified '89 5.0 stang Mass Air harness. The computer that I am using is an A3M from a '93 stang. It is reprogrammed using a Tweecer. The Injectors are 42 lbs/hr and the MAF is a Ford Lightning 90mm Mass Air. It has a 2003 Cobra Throttle Body, and all stock Ford sensors from either a '89 through '93 stang or 2003 Cobra in the case of the TB.

If I were TMeyer Inc. I would put all that together in a package.

Tim is a distributor for the FAST EFI system. That is an aftermarket Speed Density system. It's advantage is that you don't need a Mass Air meter. It's disadvantage is that you don't have a Mass Air meter.
Well I bought it. I was unable to bring it home because I couldn't use my friends trailer but I am picking it up monday. It has a miss which isn't too bad and the starter is going up but all in all its nice.
I am not 100% sure what to do with the miss. I think I am going to try plugs and wires and distruber cap and go from there. I plan to use it for a wheeling truck so as long as it keep running even with the miss I will be fine.
