Hello, been on this site and it is great but haven't found my answer to my clunking. 95 explorer 220,000 miles, I've put over 100,000 on it myself and there has been no major mechanical work what so ever...none. It still runs strong. Anyway I have had this periodic heavy thumping from the front for over 40,000 miles, nothings broke yet. If I engage the 4wd it stops. It's a heavy thump, thump thump that seems to stay the same speed regardless of how fast I go. So today I pulled the 4wd fuse from the power distrubution box and so far it has not clunked. Need to drive it alittle more to make sure. Any clues? I think it's the 4wd somehow ingaging. Is that possible. Thanks
The only insight I can offer is that my 94 explorer clunks really loud when I put it in 4x4. The truck kicks real hard when you engage the 4wd, so you could be right about it somehow engaging the 4wd.
Well have to tell you, still driving with the fuse out of the distrobution box and it hasn't been thumping, even seems like it rolling better. Is there not an electric switch on the axle and transfer case?
Well much to my suprise it is still occasinally thumping without the fuse in the distro box. Are those hubs cable or electronic engagement? And do you think the front axle u joint? Thanks for the input.
I do not know what system the '95 Explorer uses to engage the 4x4/hubs, but the factory hubs on the '90 Ranger, which were mechanically, versus vacuum engaged, could and do sometimes do stay engaged. Also, if you have u-joints,as opposed to the CV joint system, there is the lubrication issue (lack of grease fittings) to contend with.
