I HAVE A 1985 BRONCO WITH A 5.0 FI ENGINE. I WAS DRIVING IT HOME TODAY AND WHILE I WAS DOING ABOUT 80 MPH IT JUST SHUT OFF. I CHECKED FOR SPARK AND IT APPEARS THAT I HAVE THAT. I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH A FUEL PUMP OR IF THERE IS A RELAY OR A FUSE FOR THE PUMP. I COULD USUALLY HEAR THE FUEL PUMP HUMMING WHEN IT WAS RUNNING BUT NOW I HEAR NOTHING.
I'M FAIRLY MECHANICALLY INCLINED BUT I'M AT A LOSS HERE.
Have a friend listen underneath while you turn the key "on" just to make sure the pump is not working. Yes it could be the relay or wiring or pump. I'm not positive but I think there is a fusible link at the starter relay that shoots power to the fuel circuit, you may want to check that out.
Don't forget that you have a frame pump and a lift pump in the tank. That is why I like 1990 and up because the fuel system has only one pump that is a better in tank design.
I have an 88 and it shut off on me running about 80 too. It was the ignition control module. THis is located by the distributor. Prett common thing to go out of Fords so I hear. I think the part is about $99. Hope that helps!
Just did the FP relay and the ignition control module about 2-3 weeks ago. I didn't here the pump kick on when I had turned the key, so I tried the relay before pulling the pump. I got about 4 more starts after that and the TFI module went out. It's all good now though. The TFI module only cost $33 from the local parts store though. The relay was about $12. Good luck.
