I have a buddy that is looking to improve the low end performance of his 2003 6.0L F350 SRW. He has a 6 speed manual and the second clutch is on the way out. To get a large load rolling it takes very special care not to slip the clutch too much. The truck has 100,000+ miles on it all with a bullydog program. The upper rpm performance is very good but, it doesn't have enough low end to unroll toilet paper. I was thinking about an ffice:smarttags" /><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comlace>Aurora</ST1lace></st1:City> two stage turbo. Does anyone have any suggestions? We don't want to compromise the head gaskets or reliability. This truck has been VERY dependable. The lack of low end torque has been an ongoing issue. Thanks in advance for the help. One4<O</O
Likewise... I had 3.73's in my original 6.0 and the 4.30's are superior for pulling bigger loads. The only words of caution are the related to reduced fuel economy when traveling (unloaded) at highway speeds above 80mph... One of these days I will install an aftermarket overdrive unit and become the unofficial DRW 6.0 MPG King
4.10's might be the best bet for low-end power and decent hwy mpg
He is not real keen on the rear gear change. The truck is driven unloaded on the highway quite a bit. The mileage unloaded isn't that great to begin with. It wouldn't get 13mpg if it was coasting down Everest. If SCT is the superchip he tried it and hated it. Does anyone know of a good twin setup for the 6.0 similar to what they did to the 6.4? He might have an interest in a two speed to split the transmission gearing. I'll look into that. Keep the suggestions coming.

By the way the upper post was supposed to read "two stage Aurora turbo". Computers suck
sct is a programmer that comes with canned tunes or for about 50 dollars more you can get custom tunes LIPD diesel had a inhouse dyno with tried and true tunes anything from mild to wild....i would start there before spending money on a turbo. no programmer is better than sct...im sure he'll never look back.
The best way to solve his dilema is a 2 speed rearend, but that requires changing more than the gear. So here is my official response, trade it in on an 08 F450 with a 4.88 gear. These trucks arenot sold at Burger King, so its kinda hard to have it your way. The simplest is the 4.10 gear though. As for the clutch, junk the bullydog, and get an SCT, Matt with LIPD can make him a custom fiel just to fit his towing needs. If he is not putting a Kevlar clutch in it he is wasting his time, and any further suggestions are really a moot point.
I agree with all who said change the gears. I have an 05 with 6.0 and 6 speed manual tranny, and 4.10 gears. Unloaded I average 18.5 to 18.9 mpg at 70 to 75 Mph manual calc. only mods are stock straight pipe(kitty and muff gone)and EGR plug keeps falling out. Darn EGR plug, any body else have that problem? LOL
why dosent he put a big clutch in like a twin disk since he needs one any way the would be the best and the easest solve 2 problems fix the clutch and be able to take off better at higher rpm going from 3:73 to 4:10 isent going to change a whole lot except more fuel use.
I actually had the same problem with my 04 f350 with a 6-speed. it would drive perfect and powerful. but when you started the rig from a stop i had to use low gear most of the time because you would have to slip the clutch so bad. I think the 6 speed is just not designed to go with the 6.0 diesel as good as the 5 speed auto. the only vehicles that get away with the 6 speed and have good power from a stop are wreckers with 4.10s, or 4.30s. and they still use low gear! I wonder if he is better off trying to find one with an auto, i just bought a 07 with the auto and its a world of difference. i can hold the brake and hit the gas and the tires just roll into a smoke show in a half a second.
your friend is not alone on the lack of power 6 speed, my old truck spent a lot of time at the dealer trying to fix it. i tried superchips and bully dog, both didn't help. the superchips had a lot more power though. good luck.
