Does anyone know first hand if Bosch Plantinum 4 + or the better plugs will give better fuel mileage? Are they worth the extra $$$(8 plugs = $80 cdn)? Would they yield better mpg than the Motocraft (Ford) plugs?
Nope. I made the mistake of putting in some bosch plugs and almost immediately it didn't idle very good. Motorcraft are the only ones that the modulars seem to like and are waaaay cheaper. I just picked some up at the dealership for about $4 a plug cdn.
Some people have good luck with the Bosch plugs but, the general consensus is to stick with Motorcraft. Have you read the thread by Racerguy on changing spark plugs in these trucks? If not, it is highly recommended, good reading and preperation for doing this job. Good luck!
Even if your lucky with the Bosch Plats to begin with, I'm sure you'll have issues in less then 10K miles. I tried them in my 03, for some stupid reason, and they worked great for a couple months (I used to drive 4K per month).
Get the correct Motorcraft parts and be sure to use dielectric grease. Do yourself a favor, plan on an hour or so to change the plugs. Start on the drivers side rear and move forward, then passenger rear to front. In other words the worst ones first. If your not a patient person, might be better to pay someone to do the job, as it can really be a pain.
Good luck and avoid plugs with extra crap on them. If they truly worked so well, why aren't those designs installed at the factory?
Keep in mind that electricity can only jump one gap at a time. I work with electricity every day, electricity will find the easiest path, not paths to ground. It dosent matter if bosh made a plug with 100 electrodes, the spark will only jump one at a time. Stick with motorcraft plugs and avoid the gimmick plugs.
