I thought fuel system i the 92 (89 down for sure) down truck was low pressure. And newer high. If so you can't interchange. Just check on new one and compare numbers to make sure. According to my parts book the older trucks have different tanks than newer. Opening size maybe?
I just looked up parts at RockAuto and they look WAY different. The older units were just a small pump. small and round. The newer stuff looks like a BIG plastic Block all in one unit. New ones from rockauto ar only like 50 bucks. I woudl think for that kind of money you would be better off using what is made for your truck.
is there a way to run without the pump in the tank because when i took it apart the wires were all cut. i think its running of the front pump. whoever did this before has left one heck of a mess for me to figure out.
In a word NO. It will run but not very well. Your tank pump is a High Volume Low Pressure That feeds your pump on the frame wich is a Low Volume but high Pressure. So in a way the tank pumps fuel to your High PSI pump that make the pressure thats needed for a injector to spray the fuel right. The frame pump has a very low vacuume or pull rate thats why it needs the pump in the tank.
You should have 4 wires to your tank. Two for the pump and TWO for your gage.
What do you have to work with? Is everything cut at the tank? Did thay cut off the plug ? Whats there ??
yes they actually cut everything off then permatexed the whole cover. two of the wires inside the tank were not connected and one looked like it had burnt.
If it were me I would look for a replacement wire harnes from a bone yard and then pick up a new sending unit with pump and all. I just bought a new unit from local parts store for a rear tank on my 89 F250 for $115 plus tax. With the harnes you can match up wires and replace from the main harnes running alone the rail to the tank / sending unit / pump.
i put the old pump back in without the pump wired in, after a fewstarts shes purring like a kitten. gas gauge still doesnt work but at least shes runnin again.
