I have a '06 w/10,000 miles and the last two times I have been coming home from the cabin pulling my 16' sled trailer (on the interstate) the truck suddenly loose's power. It feels like a gas engine that's not running on all cylinders. I pull off on the side of the road and the idle is real rough for about 30 seconds or so. Once it idles for a while the idle smooths out and it runs like nothing ever happened. On the last trip home (about 1 1/2 hrs on the highway) it did it three times. There were no other indications of a problem (ie; dash lights/abnormal gauge readings) Any idea's???
Just changed the oil for the second time at 8,200mi the truck actually has 9,200mi on it. Have been changing oil at 4,000mi. The truck was a year old in Jan. and I am the original owner. It just started doing this in the last month. Driving around town it seem's to run normal.
Also after it acted up and I let it idle on the side of the road, when I pulled out I pushed the pedal down more than needed and it had all the power it should.
Nothing after market on the truck. I have the Lariat package so all I have is the standard gauges.

Had that happen to me. They replaced the HPOP and the #7 fuel injector. Don't get me started as to WHY it had to be replaced, or THEIR reason why they told me it had to be replaced.
Did your truck run normal except when the power loss happened? That's what mine is doing and if the injector/HPOP went bad wouldn't it run bad all the time.
Ceopi, The filters are the next thing I'm going to change, I'll let you know how they look.
Thanks everyone
I've had the same exact problem with my 05 on 2 different occasions. I also know of many others that have experienced this same problem.
So far no one has come up with any 'one' reason this happens. But, if your EGR gets dirts and sticks open, you might get these type of symptoms.
When mine truck had this problem I took it to the dealer both times and they could not find anything.
So, I took it back and told them it was the EGR acting up and they replaced it. After that I have not had that problem again BUT, the problem was so rare I don't know if it will happene again or not. It's very frustrating and scary to have something weird like that going on with your truck (which is supposed to be reliable). No when I travel, especially towing my 5th wheel, I can't help but be concerned about it.
I really love this truck but it won't take too many more problems like this to send me off to buy another brand.
Had a simular problem. Lost power, had to park and wait 5 minutes. Tried again, lost power again right away. Set for 10 minutes, power normal. Took to dealer and he found no codes.
I think it is egr related( this is my 3rd 6.0 and I've had lots of egr experience) because now it seems to cycle at times between a more traditional diesel rattle to a more refined smooth sound like it did when new. Truck is a 07 Harley with 10m miles. I am going to complain to dealer to replace egr.
The '04 that I USED TO HAVE, did something similar to me. It would cut out, belch some black smoke then be fine. Ford dealer (certified diesel mech) said that it was just build up that needed blowed out. I traded it for a Cummins, and the Dodge dealer had to have the EGR replaced. EGR would be my guess.

Nope, it didn't run bad all the time. Occasionally it would stutter like it was missing on a cylinder, but generally, it just felt limp, like it didn't have any power.......
The reason WHY is the dealership (who shall remain nameless) botched a fuel and oil filter change, because the guy they had doing it (on a saturday, which I should have known better) was in a hurry to get done and go home and watch the Card play in last years playoffs. Crap got past the fuel filter, into the #7 injector, blocking it, and that backpressure went to the HPOP, ruining it in the process. Thats my theory and I'm sticking to it, anyway.
OUCH! I had a dealership botch a fuel filter change on me once. I went to leave for work the next day, got half way there and it died. They didn't get everything tightened correctly, and it was sucking air.
Did this problem originally start a little after a fuel fillup? If so bad fuel/contaminated fuel has partially plugged one or both filters. These engines are sticklers for fuel pressure and flow .
