I took off and cleaned my very dirty IAC today and decided to check out my MAF. I figured that the element of the MAF would've been like a coil as in a light bulb. It almost looked as such but after cleaning it, it just looked like a solid cylinder suspended from each end. Almost looks like a zener diode being suspended. Is this right? (Yes I did remove the negative battery cable while doing this.)
This is my expample that it resembles except all white:
This is my out of focus pic. I couldnt get my camera to focus on those little elements! I didnt care to chop up the security screws just to pull out the MAF for the pic, but you get the idea.
you know you can buy a security torx bit to pull the maf out right? They sell them individually at places like ace hardware or other hardware stores. I think you can get them at parts stores too, but they might be in a kit.
I guess that solves it then! So what good does cleaning the MAF do you? Is it the cleaning of the body, or the cleaning of the element itself?
The sensitivity of the MAF is dependent on the wire loosing heat as air blows past it. Dirt and oil contamination on the wire element itself insulates it. Its like having a wind breaker on.

Good analogy. This TSB essentially says the the same thing from a technical standpoint:
