Okay i was at the gas station and this guy who was also getting diesel started telling me about this trick about adding accitone to the diesel there was some formula for it. anyway he said it up his millage by like 2 or 300 miles a tank now this cant be true can it? would you realy wanna put accitone in your diesel, i have heard of guys putting canola oil the diesel to any thoughts.
Been there, done that. Yes it increased my mileage, but not enough to chance the damage I might be doing to the engine and seals (maybe 1/4 mile per gallon). I tried all different amounts per tank over a 2 month or so period. I decided it wasn't worth it for me.

pud said it! Biggest gain is by keeping it under 1800rpm or so. Also note, many folks have gone to the viton orings when repairing their drain valve leaks, several manufacturers of viton products list acetone as one of the chemicals NOT to expose viton to...

Best thing for all diesels is : get the best fuel you can get. High cetane (over 45) works the best. Also add a lubricant to this ultra low sulfur fuel (especially to older diesels). I've got a 51 cetane fuel with B5 soybean and have had great luck. In fact our local school district switched to it.
Easiest trick is to keep your tire pressures up.
I seen a significant difference (ok ~ 2MPG) increasing from 50 PSI to near 80 PSI.
Without a load or trailer the truck rides a little harder, but the gains are there.
Here's a mpg trick we've used for a long time(controversial, but works for us) Take your used engine oil from service and stor it in a clean used oil only tank. Set up a filter system, we run ours through three high-micron filters, then add about four to five gallons to twenty or twenty-five gallons of high cetane fuel every time you refill. It smokes a little more when you do get on the throttle but you kill two birds here, ridding your waste oil and buying less of that $2.50/gal fuel.
DISCLAIMER= we have not tried this with a 6.0lps yet, and change your fuel filters at or a little before service interval. Be sure you use high quality filters for the filter process.
I completely agree with pud. Biggest fuel useage is from the driver's lead foot. You'd be amazed how much money large hauling company's save by restricting their trucks to 65mph, and a/c is a killer-roll the windows down, enjoy the fresh air.
pud has the right idea for sure. Stop looking for tricks and watch how you drive, a conservative driving style will save you more fuel than all the urban legends and old wives tales in the book.
I watched my truck suck down an 1/8th of a tank last night in a little over a mile (2km) I was passing two logging trucks and I ended up at 3100rpm in 5th gear (4:10s) it was about 185km/h....if thats not proof enough then I dont know what is.
Two guys here at work (Cummins drivers) swear by the quart of Super Tech (Walmart) Two Stroke oil per tank of diesel. Claim 2 -3 mpg increase.
Assume they have 30 gal tank...assume they only get 2 mpg increase by adding the two stroke oil. That would conservatively be 60 miles more per tank full on one added quart of two stroke oil. There is no oil that would yield 60 miles if you burned a quart of it in any diesel engine (or 240 miles per gallon!!!). There simply is not enough btu's in it, or any other fuel additive available.
Will it help lubricity of the fuel? Yes it will...will it add 2-3 mpg to fuel...no way. They may honestly believe that it does...heck, half the people given a placebo feel better too!
