I am putting a now edelbrock intake part # edl-2166 on my 460 engine. I am planning on useing the original carb on it which is a holly made for motorcraft. My question is do I need a space or not and what is a space even good for. I am going to do away with all the smog/emmission stuff and egr. I am sure others here has done this any advise on doing this and will it help on gas milage.
Your mileage may go down, you will have to try it. Also listen for any pinging under load. Your original carb is calibrated very lean to work with the EGR. Some people have problems, some don't. An aftermarket carb is jetted richer and will not give you the same problems.
I do not know about your particular setup, but most I have seen use the spacer for the PCV valve going to the valve cover. If yours does, you need to keep this system, since it keeps the oil cleaner and will make the engine last much longer.
Ill say that you will save yourself a ton of headache by going with an aftermarket carb.
here in SD we have no emissionslaws and that motocraft holley was designed for? well I dont know. but a good ol 750dpmpr. and a good tune is a place to start. I've found the 385series motors to be very patieient. I can make all mine fetch a bone.
you dont really need a space, but get a good thick heat shield gasket.
Did you have a smog pump? If so, leave the plumbing on thheads and run a bolt slightly larger than the nipple right down it(dont split it ) but keep it air tight. Worked on my '84 F250.
I think more space gives fuel more room to mix and cool. more for race app.
The main problem with the Holley 4180 which is your stock carb. is they don't have POWER VALVE BLOW OUT PROTECTION. The Power Valve is a 2 stage valve $30. Also rebuild kits are around $100. The 4180 will work just fine on your new Edelbrock Performer manifold. I used a 4160 50 state smog legal, with blow out protection, Holley on my 86 4x4, 460, C-6. Mileage was unchanged around 10-11 MPG empty. I also used a 1" torq-swirl adapter. I plan on going with the new Summit Spiral Bore Phenolic spacer. Getting the carb away from as much heat as you can will always help performance. That is why I use spacers.
