starter spacing

i have a 460 can i space the starter out with great 8 washers on the two holes?

Why do you want to space it out ? Why not just buy the correct starter , it sounds like you have the wrong one. I would not space it out that much.

Why do you need to shim the starter? Is it grinding? Are you sure you have the correct starter?
