Ok, if you had a 79 F-100 that had a 300 inline 6 would you rebuild it, or replace it with a 400???

The 400 does fine on gas when set up correctly. I would rebuild the 300 tho.

Bud, it all depends on what YOU want to do with it. Do you want something more original, something mildly modified or something that is a fire-breathing monster? Depending on what kind of shape your truck is in and how YOU visualize it is all that matters.
Just my 2 cents.

When I am do with it I want people to look and hear it and say nice ride, I love the sound of a strong motor and love the power to get up and walk away from the line, I want to lay rubber at the burn offs and have people remember my truck.

A well built (key emphasis on well built) V-8 will supply you with the desired torque and horsepower. The key is to build it with the proper cam, intake, carb, etc. Design your engine to do what you want it to do. For instance, my '74 302 was originally a 2 Bbl and single exhaust. It now has a Holley 600, Edelbrock Performer Intake with good headers and Flowmasters. I wanted it to have plenty of torque and still have mild manners on the street.
Plan our engine out before you build it-regardless of the 6 or V8

well if its going to be a toy i WOULD NOT put a 400 in it. both my trucks have them and they are dogs. cost alot af money to build a 400. i would put a 460 in it. even a stock 460 would be a tire shedder in that truck. and you can make alot of power very very cheaply with those engines.. just my 2cent

Check this thread out. It's kind of long but I think it gets into the numbers around P.2

Well I thank you all for the input, and I still have to make up my mind of what to do, but I now a have more info to work with. And just a little note, the inline 6 with glass packs sound like the angels calling my name when I put my foot to the floor

Check the specific engine forums for engine rebuild options.

Be sure to take a look at the stroker kits available today. A 351w stroked out to a 408 or a 427 would put the 300's torque to shame. and I drove quite a few 300's - They are great, but for not a lot of money the strokers are the way to go. Typically, about $1200 for the rotating assembly and another $1100 for good heads and you're easily in the 400-500 hp range. Plus with Alum heads and intake it will be alot less wieght than a 460-probably a couple hundred pounds.

300=great torque so-so HP per in^2
400(stock)=ok torque for the cubes, crappy HP
400(beefed) plenty of TQ and HP, but how much are you willing to pay?
460= best of both worlds, but a pain to swap in.

I guess it still depends on your choices. I'd take a 300 over a 400 any day, but I pull trailers and don't have anywhere to be too quickly. That's why I'm ok with my little 302. It gets the job done, but it just might be tomorrow before I get there
