I need some help guys. Ever since I had a headlight go out, I have had nothing but problems. I took the old one out and figured I would get one of the same- no big deal. Figured while I was at it, I would get silverstars. So I get the bulb out, and it is a 9006. I buy a set of silverstar 9006su and put them in.
I figured the lights were going to be great, but they weren’t. The lighting was uneven and all over the place. So I replaced the 9006su with the 9006st. This was a little better, but I just have not been able to get the lights adjusted the way they need to be. The lighting is very uneven and it wasn’t before.
Here are my questions-
1.) Could someone have put 9006 in by mistake and this is my problem? (Sylvania website says that is for fog/running lights and I don’t have either)
2.) Should I be using 9007?
3.) Could it be silverstar+projector style is not a good combination?
I need to get this fixed because it is very upsetting. If I need to get rid of the aftermarket I will.
You should have 9007's if stock. I went from Silverstars to PIAA to these and like these the best. Plus, only about $30 bucks delivered to the door. Very bright by the way.
When I installed the aftermarkets, they were direct replacements. the bulbs were the same from when I got the truck. I dont really think the problem is the bulbs, but if they are supposed to be 9007 and I have 9006 i want to be sure.
If anyone has some 03 style stockers they want to get rid of, I am interested....
Ford has been using the 9007 since about 1994. However, to make sure that you have the wrong bulbs here is what will happen. Your headlights will be very dim on low beam, and will almost go out on high beam. Also, the high beam indicator will be on at all times that the lights are on. The reason for this is that the ground and one of the positives are in different locations. So, when you are on low beam, the power has to travel through the low beam filament, and then through the high beam filament to find ground, which it will do in the dash through the high beam indicator. Then, when you are on high beam, it will have to travel through the high beam indicator, the high beam filament, the low beam filament, and back through the low beam positive wire until it can find a ground. I am not sure where it finds the ground when the high beams are on, but it has to travel so far, and has such a hard time finding ground that it glows very dim. If I were you, the first thing that I would do is find a set of 9007 Silverstar Ultras that someone else has that you can switch real quick to test them. Then, if that helps, buy some new bulbs. You might want to talk to the place that you bought the bulbs from to see if they can do an exchange. As the 9007 and 9006 bulbs are identical, it is a mistake that is made all of the time.
01powerstrokef250, thanks for that reply. i emailed the place I got the aftermarket headlights from to see what they recommend. I doubt i will get a reply from them. All i know is I am very leary about getting any aftermarket headlights now. Projectors look cool, but functionality matter more to me than looks.

O.k. I hate to admit it but go to wally-world and buy your 9007's at least that way if something does go wrong then you can take them back.
Projector beam headlights are a lot different than a stock headlight. They have a sharp cut off of the beam vs. the 9007 bulbs the stock headlights use. I have projector beams and I like them, but a lot of people don't. I run silver star lows and highs, and I "fill in" the middle with driving lights.
The stock headlight assemblies diffuse the light better so they light up the general area better in ideal conditions. Where the projector beams excell is in snow, rain and fog. They don't give off as much glare reflected baclk at you or to oncoming traffic.
The one thing I can say is you either like them or you don't. If you don't like them, you probably never will. You might be happier w/stock headlights with a higher watt or whiter 9007 bulb.

I have those also & Like them quite a bit. I upgraded my headlight harness as well & that made a nice difference also.
I have a new set of 9007s if you want you can have them, they are just plain bulbs not Silverstars or anything special.
