Hey all...got the GF a 87 bronco xlt (351) awhile back...(been a chev owner...booo)...anyway...running good....till it wouldnt start one morning with the key...figured out it was the net. saft. switch...had a frnd. by-pass it...and now it isnt shifting!! I tried shifting manually (btw...its an auto)and it will shift from 1st to 2nd....but when I try putting it into drive it acts like it is at 1 1/2!!!! WHAT THE @@@@@? Any suggestion?
he used a meter...I had the switch off the truck and he spliced two together. I thought that he must have done the wrong ones after it wouldnt shift...so I disconnected it and jumped the selenoid again to see if it would shift then...and it made no difference.
It may be that the shifter linkage is worn enough that it needs repair or re-adjusting to shift correctly. You might check the Tranny forum on the correct way to adjust linkage. The other possibility is that the tranny is just getting bad. Is is an OD tranny or a straight 3 speed auto?
I assumed it would be a three speed, but I'm less familiar with the later big broncos. I wouldn't think that the neutral safety switch would affect shifting unless something got moved when you were working on fixing that.
thats kinda what I was thinking....I'm not sure what the arm is that connects to the shaft what comes through the safety switch is...or how I would adjust it if it got moved...(we bought a stupid haunes manual...what a crock of...)
I don't have a haynes or chiltons for anything that new, so maybe someone else can chime in and give you some direction. Again, you might try the tranny forum on how to adjust the linkage on your tranny. I would think you have a c4 or c6.
how can i check the modulator, anyone know? Also...I just called an auto parts store...they told me there were 3 different part #s ...each corresponding with a different color stripe on the nipple. How can I KNOW that the one that is on the tranny (havent had it for even a year...always seemed like it was lacking 3rd gear power...i.e: gutless) is the correct color/part? And what is the difference between the three different modulators? Anybody?
I would check that the vacuum lines are hooked up to the modulator fires and not leaking. The tranny shop should have check this, but may have been more interested in replacing the tranny rather than a simple fix. It might also be worth following Kemical's advice and do a fluid/filter change too. At least if you drop the pan you will get some idea of the amount of crud in the pan and the condition of the tranny. Others will have to help you with the part # problem
Check the haynes manual pages 7B-6 and 7B-8. You'll see diagrams of your vac. modulator and NSS. If you read about the NSS in that manual it will tell you that it needs to be adjusted when removed or replaced. I have the exact same truck you do and had to adjust my entire trans. when I got it cause it was lacking umpf!!! The thing was a turd, straight up a bicycle would outrun me. I had to adjust the NSS, All of the bands, The kickdown rod, And service the trans(filter and fluid). It runs MUCH better now, but still not what I expect, but that's a whole other thread.
