Stock '46 wheels

I have read a few places a little about the older stock wheels. I know just enough to be dangerous now. The truck I have had 16" on the back and 15" on the front, and they seem to be older type, narrow wheels. Since all of the 1/2 ton truck wheels will bolt on though, I am not sure if they are correct for the '46. If I have my info correct the trucks came with 16" but a lot of people like running the older 15" wheels. My goal primarily is to have narrow style wheels that I can put a set of original or repro hubcaps on. Of course I don't have any hubcaps for testing :-(

Can anyone give me suggestions on what to look for, on these wheels (IE size of the center hubcap circle)? What year trucks had the same size hubcap (the '49 truck that I am planning on pulling the tranny from has a set of 16" wheels -- of course they might not be original to that truck)?

Thanks

Look in my gallery at the wheels on my truck. Do they look like that. They wheels on a 46 are the same as on my truck. I can try to send you some pics of them if you like. Scott

The wheels you want aren't the easiest to find. From what I have heard, late '40's Mercs had the wheel you want. It might be easier, and not cost much more, to find a new set of wheels. There are a few mfgs of new steel wheels that will accept the stock hubcaps. Some that come to mind are Wheel Vintiques, Stockton Wheel, etc.

Thanks Scott. My wheels do look like that. The hubcap looks like it snaps into the center of the wheel instead of outside of nubs like on the 80's wheels that I got to move the truck around. You can almost make out my passenger side front wheel in my gallery. Are those wheels that you have original to the '51 -- are the centers basically the same as the '46?

Gary, you can almost make out the Merc hubcap on the drivers side front in my gallery:-) The guy said that the front wheels were off his Merc. I am not sure that I want to do 15" all the way around, Based on the wheel opening clearence that I saw, I think I would need to lower the truck significantly to make the 15s look right. I am definately going to check the new wheels out though, if nothing else I can get a better idea for the years that the wheels interchange as stock -- thanks Gary.

So if the '49 has the same style wheels I will just grab them -- Hopefully I can find some more 80's to put back on the truck, I just don't feel right putting the '49 on the ground, even if the guy is parting it out.

I agree with Gary on the wheels and another thing is that the new wheels are designed to run tubless tires, which is a good thing.

You can run 15s still have them fit the wheel wells. I run 15s on one of my '46's. I have 235/75s on the rear. They fill the space well on my truck.

Duh, I guess 15s would be ok. The '70s wheels that I got are 15s and they looked ok, I just need the right tire to go with it. Thanks again Gary. I looked at Stockton Wheels and if I found the right ones, the 15s are only $90 each. I might just have to go that way.

Here's another place in Fresno, Ca. that makes wheels. Prices seemed reasonable.

Mike -- that looks like a great site. It seems to have a lot of good info on the wheels, as long as I am reading it right. This is the wheel that I am looking at, does this look like the correct wheel? http://www.rallyamerica.com/14-16series.html I guess even if it is a little off it looks like it would work for what I want.

By the looks of the info on this page the trucks kept the same hubcap style through '65

Can't seem to get into the website right now.

But let me know if you'll be ordering through them, I joined the "Hamb Alliance" and get 10% off...cost 50 bucks to join, but I don't think it'd be worth it for you just for one purchase.

I don't really know what the stock wheels are supposed to look like, on my '42 are newer wheels, but it did come with one old, old, old 15inch that I thought was original, due to the old rubber on it.

I emailed them. The wheel above is considered to be stock looking (of course it was pointed out that stock is 16" :-) Hmmm 10% off. 5 wheels hubcaps and rings = $550 so I would get $5 plus a Hamb Alliance membership. Hmmmmmm.

Thanks everyone, this was a lot of help.

Yep...just go to JalopyJournal.com and register, then look for the link to become an Alliance Member...there's several Alliance Venders that off discounts from free shipping to so much off on a purchase.
