I bought a used 2003 F350 4X4 7.3 diesel,6 speed, daully flatbed this is my first diesel in cold weather it has a fast idel i was wondering if thats a factory thing or do you think it might of had a chip in it at one time and one more thing the ball joints are bad, what brand do think would be good cost not a probem i'm a firm beleaver in you get what you pay for
The truck is just tring to maintain it's temp in the cold. My 2002 F-350 does the same thing. Goes from 500 RPM in park to about 1000 RPM's in about a 2 minute stand still time. Don't worry about it.
Jack up the side you want to check,(high enough so you can get your hand under it).Put a jack stand under it.Grab the tire with one hand at the botoom and one at the top.
Try pulling with the top hand and pushing in with the bottom hand, then vice-versa.
It you get any movment,it could be your ball joints or wheel bearings. You need a 2nd person to see where the play is coming from.
There should be no play.
i had the wheels off changing the brakes and could move the roter up and down and could see the movement in the ball jointsand the fact i could hear a hammering noise as i drove down a bumpy road
That noise could also be caused by loose sway bar bushings.
But if you see the ball joints moving as you say, then they are bad.But your noise might not be gone when your done replacing them.
