Do I need a new hitch?

I have an '07 F150 that has the Class III Ford Hitch (rated at 5,000 lbs). I need to be able to pull around 5800 pounds (car + Uhaul trailer). I will need to tow this setup 3 times a year (500 miles roundtrip each).

Do I need to step up to a class IV hitch or will a weight distribution hitch do the trick?

Remember the trailer is a rental so I can not drill or mount anything to the trailer.

Weight distribution should be fine. Most standard trailer side mounts just sit on top of the frame and have the bolt on back to snug it down and keep it from bouncing off. No drilliong required. Also, if sway control is needed, many trailers have the tapped holes for the friction sway bar ball mount in them.

Depends on the hitch weight? YOur hitch is probably ok, but if hitch weight is too much, your front end will become too light and the trailer will pull you all over the road. 500 miles is a LONG way to go with a swaying trailer!! You need a weight distro. hook-up and prob a sway control.

Final Question. Does anyone know if the Equal-i-zer WD is compatible with the Uhaul trailer? Will it fit and will it work well with surge brakes? I guess that was two questions. Thanks!

i dont think it will work with surge brakes but i am not 100%. I would think that the linkage would prevent the master cylinder from compressing.
