I think i have a class III hitch on my truck what ever came on the truck form ford rated for 5000lbs. do i need to get a class IV 8000lbs or V 15,000? our trailer weighs 2300lbs dry and the tractor weighs 4700lbs = 7000lbs if i dont have an attachment on the tractor. do you think a IV is ok or do i need a V, i hope to 1 day get a ~7x18 enclosed trailer and dont wont to buy a new hitch 2 times. i dont wont the thing to brake and hurt someone so what do you suggest? i dont wont a 5 wheel or goose hitch i need my camper shell to put stuff in and the trailer.
You should have a class 4 hitch if it came from the factory. 10,000/1000 tongue. At least thats what I have seen on most superdutys. All three of my past ones had a class 4.
It should be all you need. Class 3's are worthless.
I am more worried about the liability of hauling more than what the manufacturer specifies as the truck's abilities. Pulling the load is one thing. Stopping is another. If the brakes are not good enough and you have an accident, well, my lawyer is going to have a field day.
most of the class 4 i have seen only say 8000 but if it is for 10000 then i'm good as gold thanks.
Mine is factory and it sais 10,000/1000, 12,000/1200 weight distributing.
I also have a class 4 from a F250 that I parted out that is a (IIRC) Reece, or one of the big names that sais the same weights as the stock hitch.
Either way you should be ok. I googled the specs and It said class 3's are good for 6k, class 4 10k, and class 5 12k. They may have changed over the years

It seems like those numbers change a little from one mfg to another. I've seen some class 5 that are good up to 18k!
well for the most part i dont have to worry about that to much. in AL if you are hauling with your farm truck you can get away with no tag on the trailer and as long as the load is not so big it wont fit down the road you are good. some of the things i have seen where 23 feet wide and took all of the road, and you dont have to have a permit. got to love AL.
mine says 5000 weigh and 10000 with a wdh. the trailer dose not have a wdh so is that ok or a bad thing waiting to happen?
this is what i would like to have 18,000lbs http://search.cartserver.com/search/...s=gl2211&GO=GO!
