well this is my first diesel and i need help its a 1987 f 350 with a 6.9. I was told the injector pump is bad. it runs real ruff at idel and smokes real bad and it bearly hits 2000 rpms and when i drive it it might go 25 mph. has no power so if some one could plz help me it does not have a turbo....yet will be getting one after i get the bugs worked out
Definitely sounds like a bad IP. When you install the new one, you'll need to get the dynamic timing adjustment done by a shop. It's about $85 where I live, probably about the same all around.
How good are you at turning wrenches? If you're a DIYer, you can do this installation but there are a few catches along the way. One of the posts in this forum recently discussed it. I'll post a link here when I find it.
DIO, too long a handle to type! Welcome to the forum, how many miles on the rig. Are the injectors and return lines painted grey still? If so do yourself a favor while your getting a rebuilt IP and replace the injectors, and return lines. Go to the user CP and post a signature with the details about your truck, it will help us help you.
Get 2 bottles of Diesel Kleen fuel additive and pour half in the tank your using. Have you drained the water separator on the firewall by the booster. If it is not sealed correctly air will get into the system and give you similar symptoms. So drain it by pulling the handle (Not on Mom's driveway) and try reseating it, then put a 3/8 bolt up the drain hose. If you have not replaced the main fuel filter for a while do it too, fill the filter with the remaining fuel additive. All the other info re the lines may well be part of the problem, but you can't hurt the IP by doing my suggestion first.
how do you adjust it and it has about 120000 miles on it
Unless you've done this before. I wouldn't do it - as you might create more of a problem. Do the easy /cheap stuff first as was mentioned. 120K on the Ip isn't bad. You might have a fuel filter plugged creating your problem. As mentioned if the return lines between the injectors are painted gray. Do replace these.
where is a good place to buy aftermarket returnlines and turbo kits and injectors i think im just gonna replace injector, return lines, glow plugs and injector pump and filter.
I've always gone to IH truck dealership for IP and injectors. This way if a problem they will stand behind them. return lines you can get on internet from one of the sponsors if I remember correctly.
i got 277,000 before i changed my ip never had quite the problem you state just rough
idle hard to start smoked like a pig when cold. i replaced mine last week with one i was told that 107,000. night and day difference. i had a bear of a time restarting it
i gave up and came back the next day and started it first try. i have a 1987 f250 6.9l
if the motor is taken care of it will last a long time my old 6.9 blew both head gaskets and wouldnt pull a trailer for nothin i took one out of an 84 f250 and put it in mine it was an old hay truck put head gaskets on it when we got it and put the motor in mine it has a good 160,000-170,000 on it and pulls a trailer like it should the dipstick still leaks but other than that it runs fine
DirtyIntentionsOffro,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI forum.
I would also start with a fresh fuel filter and a double dose of Diesel Kleen.
If the truck has been setting for a while, which it sounds like it has, there could be algae growing in the fuel tank.
That would stop the filter up and possibly the fuel lines also.
Start with the inexpensive things first.
When you remove the fuel filter, drain it in a clean container and see what comes out of the filter.
DIO, when you take your filters off, fill them up with SEAFOAM before you put them back on, either new pref. or the old. this along with the diesel kleen in the tanks might just give you an improvement... i had almost the same problem, but mine came from running b15 in it with out knowing that is was bio fuel when i filled up. it smoked like hell, ran really bad and only got 2 MPG. the foam, put it with a warm engine improved from 2 to 14 mpg and ran smoother with one dose.
Jon, do you hear a fast repetative clicking noise when you tuen your key on? if a gp looses connection on the bullet on top, it can send it into a spasm.
