hey all, i checked my tire pressures yesterday. I had 45 psi in the rears and 28 in the front lol. I found by accidentally spinning one of the rear tires that theyre overinflated, so i bled them down to 40 psi and put 40 psi in the front too. I read on the sidewall of the tire that each tire can hold like 3000 lb at 80 psi (!). i was just wondering if that means i should be runnign something more like 60 psi. Are these normal numbers for truck tires? Im just not used to such high pressures. my mustang takes like 34 psi. The front tires on my truck still look a little bulgey....think i should try 50, 60, 70?
Look in the door jamb area or in the owners manual. I am assuming you have a f250 or 350? Those type tires are rated to run that high because they are designed to carry heavy loads.
I run the pressure as high as I can stand(rough ride) without going over the sidewall pressure rating. It gives better gas mileage. If you have a very narrow rim on a wide tire, you may need to lower the pressure so it will not wear in the middle.
ill have to check the door jamb, but i dont have a manual. And i dont think these are stock tires. The thing has 89 thousand miles on it so i doubt theyre oem.
E-rated tires, which are common on F250 and heavier trucks are designed to carry heavier loads, which they can do partly because they can have such high pressures. If you are driving unloaded, you can run with lower pressures to get a softer ride, just be careful you aren't getting uneven tire wear.
Pretty much every wheel and tire combo will have a different sweeet spot. Myself, I just run them at 60 psi, which gives me all the load carrying I need.
