Question OilGuard Bypass - filter changes

When do you guys change your OilGuard filter elements? Their website recommends changing both elements when the oil is changed with no element changes between OCI's. I have also read where some folks change either the full flow filter element or the bypass element at 5k intervals, and then change both out when they change the oil.

My first 5K sample/test interval is coming up soon, and I want to be prepared to do the right thing, and I'd really appreciate hearing what your experiences have been with whatever approach you use, because I know that there are several folks out there who have been using the OilGuard system for a while now.

I change my oil and filter at 5000 miles and my Oilguard filter every other time, ie 10,000 miles. My Blackstone used oil analysis results have been excellent, now at 43,000 miles and no problems.

Thanks for the response. Let me make sure I understand. You change your "full flow" filter with every oil change, and you change your oil every 5k miles. Then, you change your smaller "bypass" filter element every other oil change, which is every 10K miles. Did I get this right?

Also, have you tried extending your drain frequency at all? If so, why did you go back to 5K? If not, why not?

i would not go any higher than 5k on the change interval without a analysis the reason i got mine is to keep the main wear particles out that cause the damage not really to run my oil longer....

I understand. I'm hoping to go for longer OCI's. I'm getting ready to take my first analysis sample at the first 5K on this change... added the bypass on this most recent change. I'm expecting to see some good things.

If you are set on extended oil change intervals, at least watch the viscosity number that you get back from the analysis. I have heard that the low point where you might consider changing the oil would be when you drop to 60 - ish. Maybe even when you drop below 62. There are quite a few folks on this forum that will probably be along shortly to give you advice with experience to back it up!
