So I decided to check the transmission fluid level a few days ago. I was not sure how to check it with my Excursion so I tried checking it well the engine was running and the transmission was in park and I tried checking it without the engine running. I waited 5 min after the engine stooped and I tried waiting 60 min after it stopped. No matter how I check it, the level is about 3/4 a inch above the doted area on the dip stick. Well its ultra unlikely that its truly overfilled that much because 100% of the scheduled work from the previous owner was done at a automotive shop. So am I just checking it wrong or what? If it was truly overfilled that much wouldn’t the trany already be shot?
Its gonna expand and bi higher when warmed id imagine. Shops make mistakes just like a shadetree mechanic can. I trust myself more then a shop for most jobs. If its high id go to a mechanic you trust and see what they recommend to get the extra fluid out. Dont let em sell ya on a full flush unless you havn't had one in around 40K miles, and if you trust those things.
They dump the stuff in at X quarts because the book said X quarts. Dad owns a Ford Crown Vic. Had that issue with motor oil too. One tech checked the parts he had and found that the dipstick tube was shorter than it should be. IOW Quality was not Job 1 when they installed the wrong tube. So, first thing I would check is the parts of the dipstick tube and the dipstick. There is a drain plug so you can drain it.
Your 02 shouldn't have the wrong dipstick. There was actually a recall on those short dipsticks but it was only for much ealier years and didn't include Excursions.

Neither should Dad's Crown vic but it did happen. Never hurts to make sure before you go chasing problems.
