Hi, I'm new to the club. I have a 57 f-100 that I picked up a year ago. The original motor was replaced with a 68 mustang 289 and c4 tranny. The engine runs great, but the tranny leaks badly. My problem is: the column shifter sends the linkage rearward and the tranny being a floor shifting mustang tranny needs to have the linkage sent forward. I contacted Lokar and they do not have a kit for this application. 1) Do I scrap both and try to find a better engine/tranny combo? 2) Will a c6 tranny from a truck or larger car fit the 289? 3) Can I do anything to the c4 to make the linkage go forward? any help would be super appreciated. Thanks, Paul
Welcome, nice to have you on board.
The valve body can be easily changed, it`s a simple inexpensive job for a transmission shop and not costly.
Someone may jump in and explain eactly what`s involved.
On the C4's I'm familiar with, the lever is keyed to the selector shaft ("D"-shaped rod and hole in lever). There are universal type levers that can be used.
I've a C-4 mated to a built 300 I-6 installed in my '58 Mercury M-100 & had No problem attaching the linkage to the Automatic Column Shifter & having it work properly, so I'm not exactly sure Why you are having such a problem w/ yours.

There are different valve shift bodies bodies, for floor shift and for column shift. The Mustang had a floor shift and the truck has the column shift.
I ran into this when I got a used C6 from a 67 XL 500 (floor shift) and installed it in a Parklane Mercury (column).
It confusing at first but a simple fix in the valve body.
Thanks a lot for all the info guys!! I think I will take it to a tranny shop and have the linkage flipped or what ever they reccommend. I didn't think it was possible to keep this engine/tranny package, but now I know I can! Thanks again Paul
