Spark Plug Woes

It seems as some of the newer plugs are taller than the older ones so the standard one will not fit! Snap-on will sell you a new 5/8 socket to fit for a nice price. Anyway no more missing for now.

Spark Plug Woes

I've got a '99 with the 4.6L engine and I got the check engine light at 40,000 miles. The code indicated that it was rich on bank 2. I changed the plugs, 3 hours worth, to Bosch Platinums and I immediately felt the difference. Smoother running and better performance. By the way, my plugs all had dielectric grease on them when I removed them, and my new ones went in with never-seize on the threads and dielectric grease on the connections. I know they are supposed to last 100,000 miles or three years according to the book and that's what I got, three years. I'm happy to have it done, but I wouldn't want to do it every day that's for sure.

I'm just saying I think you would be better off changing them every 30,000 miles than 100,000 miles. Changing them every 30,000 miles they would be less likely to break off or be siezed in the heads. I would sooner spend a little time and money every 30,000 miles than a lot every 100,000 miles.

I am going to have to agree with 2000 littleredexpress on this one. If you speak to any one that actually services the trucks with the 4.6l there are going to tell you that you should replace the plugs at 30,000 miles the ensure proper fuel mileage and performance. They will also tell you that leaving them in any longer my damage the block and the rest of the motor and result in poor performance. And they all agree that it is a major pain to get the plugs out after 30,000 miles. Regardless of what the service manual says. And by the why call ford and ask when they recommend you to change your plugs and wires they will also tell you 30,000 miles.
