I just lost the "down" functionality of my power window switch (from driver side) for the passenger side window. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with their power window switches, on the drivers side arm rest.
And, if a replacement is necessary, is it a do-it-yourself job, or definately a Dealer job. All other switches on driver side arm rest work, as well as all other window switches all the way around - pssgr front, rear & drvr side rear.
Provided this is a relatively simple do-it-yourself job, is there a How-To posted somewhere, or at least a schematic of the arm rest for dismantling & of the elec. switches?
If you are out of warranty then it is definitely a do yourself thing. Takes almost 3 minutes if you take your time.
Pop off the speaker grille, pop up the armrest cover, remove and replace the switch with a small screw driver tip or pic tool.
These switches are notorious for the failure of the driver window switch. They are none too cheap either.
After you replace it see if the driver window drags badly. This can cause high resistance and premature switch failure. Lubricate the window run with dry silicone spray if needed to speed window operation or replace the defective components if that doesnt help. A common problem in the winter is frozen windows and people will often try to open them while frozen solid. The persitent attempt to force the window down will pull the glass mounts off the glass or partially off the glass and or damage the regulator. With todays cheap crap parts from GLOBAL MARKETS you can bet they are not hardy like years past.
if possible try to take the switch apart. i did so in 2000 f150 and it helped alot. i had to push extra hard for it to go down, then finally it quit on me. one day, i said screw this and took all my switches apart and cleaned them with a qtip. it took about 20 minutes, prolly less once you know how to do it, and it extended the life of my switch. about 1 year later i had to clean the problematic one again, but it worked fine afterwards.
Okay, I got everything disconnected, but was not able to "open" the switch module. It seems as though the rocker switches are preventing complete disassembly. Any advice on further disassembly?
that's what i thought at first but if there anything similar to my '00 f150 you can take it apart. if you get that box apart clean the copper contacts. i didn't apply alcohol directly to my qtip. i used a patch from a first aid kit and squeezed it on my qtip then cleaned the contacts. look for little hooks and holes and squeeze on them with a small screwdrivers and press and pull whichever it looks like it needs to be pulled. if you reallly can't get it apart then i guess you do need a new assembly.
