Well jumping on to one of Microsofts new OS's prior to at least 1 service pack is kinda like jumping into a new engine design, remember the 03 6.0.
I'm looking at a new laptop, and I agree with you. But I would prefer not to get one with XP then pay to upgrade later. Plus it will not be my primary. Also, the best deals are on laptops that come with Vista.

I got a new gate way lap top at best buy its a 1GB with a 15.4 screen that is an XP but it came with a free full version vista upgrade..not the sample vista...I think I paid 850 bucks with a 2 year whatever happened warrantee..I haven't up graded yet...like Alan said..wait and see what happens in the 1st few months
From what we are seeing at work the home versions are fairly stable for a new release, the ultimate is a memory hog though. There are some security qwirks that will be annoying until you get used to it and just about everything has been moved around as far as control panel stuff so some settings are hard to find. The "Pro" (enterprise) version needs much work and the new longhorn server release to work properly.

Yeah, I've experienced that. We are currently runing SBS2003 at wotk and will continue to unitil XP is no longer supported in two years. I have had the opportunity to do some software compatibility testing and my Acct/CRM software is not supposed to be compatible till their Q2 release.
At home, I will not upgrade any XP computers. I think that there is no significant advantage. Only reason that the laptop is Vista is because it will be a retail purchase. On sale of course.
