Anybody out here use a tranny 'chip' to help out their E40D? My '91 5.0 has a bit of a problem with the torque converter lockup - basically (put in terms that I understand...) since I modified the engine now the tranny is 'out of sync'due to the computer inputs.
The dyno shows good power as the curve climbs and then the converter locks up and 'kills' it and then it has to start over again. This is sort of basic but gets the point across.
What I need is to delay the lockup for a bit longer so that the power curve will build longer. Anybody have any ideas or good experience with any of these?
I had a 90 5.8 and ford had a tsb that was a new pcm that prevented converter lock up in third. It would lock up in 4th. It was for trans hunting when towing. I remember it worked real nice. Maybe one of those chips can do the same thing. If it does it will feel much better.
I forgot to say that I also tried a chip and did not like it because they wanted premium fuel and I didn't feel the change was worth the added cost of gas. It pinged real bad so I took it out. I don't remember the brand but they were nice to give me one to try since I worked for a Ford Dealer.
Dang..... I thought I knew all the acronyms!!! I feel kinda dumb here, but what is TSB and PCM? If I follow you correctly the part was available from FORD directly?
TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin which Ford (other makes do it as well for their vehicles) issues for particular vehicles. This is done after a certain problem of like is seen by different dealers, and a TSB is issued and sent out to all dealers to use as diagnostic and repair info.
This unit plugs in between trans and truck and is supposed to allow you to delay torque converter lockup and adjust line pressure.
