Well Today i went out and purchased a code reader for my 84 Bronco II. I ran the codes and passed the KOEO codes but my memory had codes 31, 41,54. I know code 54 refers to my intake air temp sensor. That code is no biggy because I have done some work with my air cleaner off and it throws that code since the sensor is unplugged. My question is regarding the other codes of 31 and 41. when my bronco is warming up I give it gas and I can hear the egr silenoid activating the EGR. I was under the impression from reading here in the tech area that when the truck is cold I would not activate the EGR? Also I am running code 41 which points to my O2 Sensor either being bad or running lean. Which one is it? Is it in need of replacement or is my truck mixture running on the lean side?
If your EGR is activating at an inappropriate time, it will screw up the mixture often throwing lean codes.
EGR should only be commanded by the computer during steady-state cruise conditions. I'd suspect your EVR solenoid (or what ever controls the vacuum to the EGR valve on an 84) is leaking. Perhaps the PFE sensor.
My EEC documentation and experience only goes back to 89, so I'm just guessing as I'm not familiar with the specifics of the EGR system from 84. Be on the lookout for differences from what I described.
Your code 31 and 41 are probably resultant from the code 54, since your IAT sensor is unplugged. I would re-connect it and warm up the engine and re-run the tests and see what you get first.
I was under the impression that the EGR only operates during warm-up.....??
Okay, I came to the realization that I forgot to run my KOER codes yesterday. So I ran them today. I received codes 12,31,35,58. So from what the manual that comes with my code reader says, I have a faulty EGR sensor. But either my book has a typo or I need help with this. For code 35 it explains that Im getting "no EGE position signal, rpm to Low." What is an EGE position signal?? Code 58 refers to "Idle tracking switch circuit fault."Would that be pertaining to my Distributor pickup?
I think the feedback carb units like yours ('84-'85 2.8L) have something similar to a throttle position sensor along with an idle speed control solenoid. Sounds like maybe you need to check / repair the idle speed and associated electrical / electronic parts on your carb and THEN re-run the KOEO and KOER tests. Did you re-run the KOEO test before the KOER test with the engine warmed up?
yes, I ran the codes in the order of KOEO then it ran the memory codes. After that I Ran the KOER codes. The truck was warmed up before each codes. Im positive I need to replace my ISC motor. Also I coming to the conclusion that my 3 months old EGR position sensor is a dud. Because the code book tells me that its voltage is out of range and also when im driving any time I put my foot on the gas I can hear it fire away which tells me the computer cannot tell which position its in. This is because the EGR should not fire at any time during initial acceleration so many sources say.
