Unhappy no start

hi everyone,
I have a 78 f250 that wont start anymore. I just rebuilt the carb and it started but the floot was out of wack. so i shut it off, and fixed it then i tried to start it but all i heard was a wierd sound from the what i belive is the battery area. so i cheacked the battery and i have full 12.53 volts. oh and none of the lights or the gauges work. just as if i have no battery hooked up.
thanks for any help
jim

Check the cables at the starter solenoid on the fenderwell and the cables at the battery. Sounds like you have a bad connection. Also check the ground cable where it is bolted to the engine.

Check the cables . Check your ground real close. And check for any melted fuse links near the solinoid. A melted fuse link will look just like a wire but will be a little thicker. When they melt it should be fairly obvious. It has to be one of those. It also sounds like the battery is a little low too. I would charge it for a while. Also if it was flooded I would pull the plugs and clean them, it will help to start it when you fix the starting problem. Good luck, Jesse.

use your voltmeter and check the battery then have someone turn the key to on, there should be a slight change in the voltage. then turn the key to start if the battery drops like 6 to 8 volts or more then you have a short somewhere, like battery or starter. even during cranking the batt shouldnt go below say 10.5 volts.

If you turn the key to on and your 12.5 reading doesnt change at all, not even a couple tenths of a volt then check fuses.

what kind of noise did you hear, a clicking?

check your grounds and fuses, if u still have no lights or anything, then follow the power with your meter. leave the black lead on the neg. batt. and use the red lead and start at the batt. u have 12v so follow the wire to the solenoid if u dont have 12 at the solenoid look at the cable, if u do go to the next component down the line if you dont have power look at the solenoid, etc.

And whatever you do, don't use bolt on battery terminals... They start off good when they're new but corrode fast and cause major resistance

Usually bigger is better.

Problem is The Battery is the HEART of any vehicle if that isn't up to snuff nothing else works.
Just because the battery reads 12+ volts doesn't mean it can crank a starter.

It's the cranking amperage that counts.

Sometimes batteries develop shorts inside themselves and become useless for starting.

try hooking jumpers to it or charger with the to start option if it start then you know that the battery is definitely the problem.

12.5 volts is almost fully charged. 12.6 is fully charged. It may seem like it should make no differance but it does. 79crew is right on, you have to load thest the battery. and see how it recovers. when it recovers to 12.5 it is not to 100%. The reason I am picky about this is I had one burn me on a drivability problem once. I pulled my hair out looking for a cable or something wrong elswere. I began with just my voltmeter and it said 12.4, so after pulling apart things I finnaly load tested the battery. All it was, was a bad battery. Jesse.

Get yourself a battery hydrometer to check the specific gravity once in a while to check the disposition of each cell.
