I'm new to the site and it's awsome! I have a 2001 F-350 4X4 diesel. When I start cold at night, I get a loud sound of rushing air. It goes away abruptly when I accellerate but comes back when the RPM stabilizes. It also seams to go away when the engine gets up to full temp. I do warm up the engine for 5-15 minutes before driving, but it does not make any difference in the noise. I am fairly certain that it is coming from the engine compartment. The noise does not change when I turn off the defroster so it is not a vacuume leak under the dash.
It's bone stock. I just don't remember it doing it last winter. BTW I was just in Hamilton two weeks ago...nice town!

If you get a chance go check out the High plains chapter and join up.
Well Im not sure if the stock exhaust mask's the sound considering I had my truck in Pheonix AZ and thats were I had my exhaust put on, didnt notice the sound untill I moved back here and at first I thought it was my turbo grinding its self to a pulp.....turns out its was the warm up valve lol. Well one of these days I will have to go check out Kalispell, I dont think I have been out there yet.
Montana the exhaust back pressure valve can be closed when the ambient temps are below 45*F and can continue to be commanded by the PCM until and oil Temp of 167*F. To be sure that is what it is drive at 40mph on a cold morning and feather the throttle you should hear a hiss, step on the pedal to accelerate and it should go away if working properly.
Hey, I'm new to the site, and my truck was making the same noise, i really noticed it after i put on the new exhaust. I believe this has answered my question. Oh by the way to all you Montana People, I'm from Coeur D' Alene, Idaho. I Guess we're neighbors. Thanks
