Myself, didn't want to pay for the Lariat, but wanted the leather. I also wanted the front bench, so I went with the XLT and paid for an aftermarket Katzkin leather interior in dark graphite (installed by dealer's subcontractor). The seats are way softer than the standard Ford leather. I'm extremely pleased. The black xlt with the chrome package and dark leather interior looks awesome.
I looked at the FX4 and Lariat in all sorts of configurations on line and was pretty much set on the Lariat. But the price changed my mind. Plus got leather in the Navi and now I crave cloth. Also didn't like two tone paints. Saw the XLT while looking for Lariat with my option list, but price made my decision for me. Got the captains chairs and center console (column shift though), in dash changer and 4X4 at $8,000 to $10,000 less than what I had intended on paying for a Lariat. Fender flares being installed today, 24" wheels on order, added some chrome. So the factory Lariat wheels would have been discarded anyway. So I guess it comes back to personal preference and financial position. I mean, as bad as I want that Shelby GT 500, there is just no way I can justify with myself paying $20,000 over the sticker. Just my 2 cents worth.
Yes that FX4 cluster is cool. I have heard of one guy who made that change and got everything working. But he had some issues initially ........... pinout, A/C not working, even had to have cluster programmed. But says it was worth it all.
I have FX4 and it is the best for me. My dad has a Lariat, the leather captain chairs are nice, but being able to have 6 seats with the fold up console is what sold me. The Lariats waste a lot of space with that gear selector. I use the area under the middle seat for all of my 12 V plug ins and power invertor. I wish Ford would make the bench style with leather. I'm afraid that the cloth seats are too tight and one small cut in the fabric will lead to an explosion of seat stuffing.
Ford does make a Lariat with the 40/20/40 seat. There were several on the lot when I bought mine. I wish I would have got one because the console shifter feels cheap and the sun relects off the chrome right into my eyes.
Besides, after a year I still find myself reaching for the shifter on the column.

Might be a recommendation for the next generation. I love the buckets and console but would have preferred to have the shifter on the column. Maybe the part where the console shifter is now could be a nav system or info center or something useful.
From what I hear the Lariat has a better ride since the FX4's shocks are tuned for off road. I know from expierence the Lariat has a better ride than the XLT.
I test drove both the FX4 and the lariat, and I honestly thought the lariat rode a little smoother, so I got the lariat with every option, and I am glad I did. Check it out mygallery.cfm?gnum=9297
I agree.
My truck came with Roush 20's w/275-55-20 Goodyears and I bought some 18" FX4 wheels w/BFGs for winter. My truck rides much better with the 20s.I cant wait until the roads are good enough to put my summer wheels back on.
Dont the FX4's have stiffer shocks in the rear then the lariats, I know the old fxx4's came with rancho's the new ones dont? O well could not be happier with my ride, and my recent mods, leveling kit and 305's BFG's
