I have a 96 302efi with 200,000+ on her and she is still runnin strong. i was under my truck the other day lookin around and i noticed that the belthousing and oil pan was all oil covered. After doing some searching on here i have read it could be either a rear main(my first thought) or an oil pan gasket. Does anyone know if one is more common than the other or have any advice on the subject? i was thinkin about throwing some lucas in to see if that helped bc it isnt leakin that bad maybe a quart every oil change (4000 miles). I know some say use lucas and others say dont, does anyone have advice on whether i should or shouldnt?
The other question i had was i starting to look for headers bc i am doing a complete exhaust come spring when i get the money. Does anyone know what the difference between the 95 and 96 are in terms that headers would be concerned. if you search for 96 long tubes you have like 2 name brand choices. if you search for 95 there are like 6 or so. it has me puzzeled.
Look closely at the oil pan gasket. These engines use a one piece rubber gasket that is common to push out and leak. An oil pan gasket usually leaves more area of the pan wet while a rear main is more in the rear and bellhousing.
I would bet on pan gasket more than the rear main, but those do go out too. I personally dont use lucas with synthetic oil, but I do throw it in with Dino oil...but thats just me..
according to post you truck 96 up has the OBD-II (sp) which has more o2 sensors, 3 of them and most older 5.0 truck have only one. And since o2 are mounted in header/exhaust the newer has more bungs for them. Good luck on search.
Thanks for the help guys....lostin90s if that is the case i will talk to my local exhaust guy and see if he can just put the bungs in the headers that way i could use 95 headers and get more of what i want and not just what i have to get....nighthawk thanks for the info on the lucas i dont run synthetic oil but i am still always leary of putting something that blocks holes and leaks into my motor as far as power steering and what not i love the stuff but it makes me alittle nervous around the motor...thanks again for the advice guys, anyone else have anything to add that could be of help?
Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also getting a VERY slow leak from dripping from my bell housing, I'm talkin' 1 drop every time I park for any amount of time, and I'm not really sure how much while I'm running the truck. My oil pan doesn't seem to be wet at all though. Does this mean rear main seal? How hard is it to service that? Please don't say I have to pull the engine .
Oh and to WV96, let me know how those 95 long tubes work out for you, and which kind you get. I'm keepin' my eye out for something that I like.
If it is dripping down the side of the bellhousing, check the top of the engine where the intake maniford connects to the block. If it seems to be coming from the inside of the bellhousing and you're sure that its motor oil, its probably the rear main, and I won't say it because you asked not to, but thats the easiest way to fix it.
i go on spring break next week and i will be able to get it in the garage and get under there and clean it up and maybe find the problem before pullin it apart to fix which isnt goin to be easy if it is any of these problems..Skandocious dont worry about hijackin the thread i think the more chattin we have goin on the more likely we are gonna get info that will cut time and help narrow the problem. my truck doesnt really leave any proof that it is leakin when i leave it sittin but it is def leakin bc the belthousing, ect is wet. if you get a chance to look before me let me know what u find..
I'm pretty sure that my leak is my rear main seal because the fluid appears to be motor oil and it is ONLY on the front side of my bellhousing, nowhere else (including the oil pan). I don't think I'm going to worry about it too much for now, it's a really slow leak. I'm just going to replace it when I get my transmission rebuilt down the road from now. Good luck.
I too am experiancing the "oil drip blues", and I am also in need of a new clutch. I'm hoping to take care of it all in one shot. I am assuming that the rear main is just a simple rubber seal that I pull out and push in the new one (1989 f-150 inline 6 5 speed with the mazda trans)??? I am also going to plan on replacing the oilpan seal, since I'm going big anyway. Is there also a front main seal? I only ask because no one here mentioned that as a culprit for the drips.
