I had my rangers front brakes, rotors and the rear drums turned yesterday. Today I picked up a small shed from home depot. When I got home I noticed a smoking from the left rear wheel. Is this just some muck on the drums? or a more serious problem? it smelt like new brakes but obviously i didnt have the shoes changed.
Nope, they shouldn't be smokin' at all. arctic y block is right, they're too tight on the one side. Ya might want to pull the drum off and sand off any shoe deposits. They can cause a condition that feels like warped drums.
Oh yeah, when using the old shoes, I usually 'lightly' block sand the glaze off of the shoes so they can properly 'wear in' with the new drum/caliper surface
Where there's smoke, there's friction, not good, the down side is that your waering your shoes out, the up side is that your getting your drum turnned for free ha ha.
Agreed, sounds like they adjusted that wheels brake shoe up too tight.
Seeing as how it's been so hot it's smoking, I'd also have the brake fluid changed when they finish. Shame on them for not doing a thorough professional job!!!!
Its also possible that they didnt clean off the shipping oil that the drum was coated in when it was put on (assuming its a new drum). I know i just didnt degrease my brake rotors when i put on new brakes and when i got back home my front brakes were smoking because they were burning off the oil.
