tranny swap
I am wanting to know everything im going to need to do it. I already have a rebuilt transmission with a new torqe converter. I need to know about the flexplate. Can I just by one and bolt it on or do I need any spacers or anything? My driveshaft is the biggest concern. will I need to by a used one frome a bone yard or could I make it work?I was also wanting to know about the trann cooler, shiftdown linkage and if there will be any additional wiring im going to have to do? Would it be better to use a floor shifter or a steering column shifter? Any info will greatly appreiciated. Thanks.
You have several issues that I would like to address.
#1 Loosing the OD is gonna cost you as much as 5 mpg and 3 for sure. Gas is headed back to $3.00 per gallon, it has to, so folk will buy alternative fuel cars. You can thank the guvment for that.
#2 Swapping out the tranny is gonna effect several components on the truck, so you might want to look at a larger picture. Don't know if power steering and disc brakes are on your scope, but I would suggest that you look at doing that at the same time.
Swapping to auto tranny, will require a different steering column, switching to power steering at the same time can be done with the same column upgrade. You don't want to do those upgrades and not have power disc brakes.
Your truck most likely has either an I-6, 302, or FE 352/360 engine in it. I would suggest that you find a 73-79 (73-76 if you have the FE engine) buy it for the donor parts.
The truck C6 uses a different shifting arm than the car. It should be running along the pan in the park position if it is a truck or could be hanging down at about 45º if it is a car C6.
We will see how you respond and take it from here.
John
