Just wondering if anyone found a solution other than the 10 tooth bendix gear? I still have not found one, and even though it sounds better, it's still eating starters. The last one (the new one when I bought the truck) lasted about 6 mo. with the bendix being replaced once. It tested good at the store, but the guys there know me, and believed me when I explained the problem so I got a new (rebuilt) one.
Wierdest thing though. We checked and my 300-6 calls for the same exact starter, but the good one I had laying around for my 6 would not work. Bolts line up perfectly, it is about 1/4 inch away from going through the index plate. Explain that to me could ya!
I put a Galaxie starter in mine. I figured I was eating a starter every 10 days or so, so what could it hurt ? They're nearly identical except the Galaxie starter has about 1/8" longer throw. That was in July and I haven't had a problem since.
I found a 10 tooth bendix locally for $5. I bought two, as I am used to having two starters layng around for this truck. The diameter of the 10 tooth I found is 1.0963" I think is what he said. If anyone who has been a part of this thread is still watching, keep your fingers crossed for me. I went out to my other bronc intending to go pick up the two bendix- and the ignition switch has quit on it, so I have to go fix that first. (at least I hope that's what's wrong, but that will be a whole 'nother post)
