NightHawk, The regular non delta 40 series Flowmaster will be quite a bit louder than the super 40 with delta. Just know that the 40 series is available with and without delta tech and all super 40s have delta tech. The super 40 will be somewhat deeper though. I had an old 40 series on my truck with it dumped under the bed and it sounded mean. It eventually just wore out after almost 10 years and 150K miles. I think the super 40 sounds better for my application though. It doesn't reasonate as much inside the truck as the 40 does. By the way, I have a single 3 inch pipe from the front cat that acts like a Y-pipe back to the muffler. I recently put a 3.5 inch turndown on it instead of the 3 inch that it had before and it made it louder and deeper. I have heard good things about Magnaflow. I agree with the comment about glasspacks. I did hear a 97 Z71 with the 5.7 that had 2 glasspacks almost as long as a yard stick and it sounded pretty good. After a while they will just burn out though and sound nasty.

I've been running a spintech muffler for a few years. I got it to be quiet. I haven't been to their site in a while but one of the features they touted was they were addressing a need for a racing muffler that was free flow and quieter to meet new lower noise requirements at racing events.
I kept my stock y pipe, diameter and regular cat (which may be doing a lot of the muffling). I liked it a lot new. It was quiet when I was easy on it and would growl nicely when I'd get on it. I doubt I ever reaped much benefit of the free flow design since I left the rest stock. I planned on getting a second and going dual but haven't gotten there yet.
Unfortunately, the one I got isn't stainless so rust has set in and it leaking badly now. I wouldn't be terribly concerned but at an idle it sounds like a continuous raspberry. I'm debating if I'll use one again. My goal is mostly quiet with enough left so there's no mistake it's a V8. Not so quiet all you hear is the belt & fan.
My big gibson is just about that quite. When it's cold out, I can hear the fan over the exhaust in the cab. I do like having the ability to slip up on things.
Just run straight pipe i think that would give you a nice rumble wouldnt it unless its illegal to do in your area and too loud (tickets) i would do it anyway
How new or old are your cats? i know if the cats are new of old enough to not be broke in or possibly getting clogged or are clogged that will affect ur sound a good bit. if you dont already maybe try to get high flow cats that should help some. also i am not sure if u said it but what size pipe do u have? as some have said larger isnt always better...since you have duals maybe try to run 2.25 to the muffler and then run 2.5 outta the muffler this will give u more pressure/sound to the muffler but let it reasonate to the tips...just a couple thoughts that could help...also you said you dont like cracking and poping i havent heard a 351 with straight pipes but straight pipes usually mean cracking and poping

I like the sound of my Classic Chambered 14/1 muffler...it's got a nice rumble to it...I imagine it'd be very loud on a larger engine.
The loudest I've ever heard is a dumped Flowmaster 40 on a Silverado with the 5.3L. Granted, the engine is well built now, but before, it was still one of the loudest exhaust I had ever heard...it would flat out drain everything out between 1500 and 1900 RPM.
I have dual exhaust, no kitties, and 2.25 i.d. pipe (2.5 od). I have decided to stick with these mufflers (Flow super 40's) and either dump them, or run the exhaust to in front of the back tire.

Definately go with straight pipes. Diesels don't have to be smogged (not in california at least, and we have the strictest laws) so there is no worries about that. My brother has the 7.3L with straight 4" pipe and it is definately the most throaty badass sounding truck I have ever heard, no competition. There is no cracking or popping at all, its very muffled and rumbling but VERY loud. Good clean sound, probably due to the turbo (which also adds a little whistle to the sound of the exhaust, another fun thing about having straight pipes). Trust me, for the 7.3L you wont find anything better than that.
I single large diameter straight pipe on a diesel especially a turbo diesel sounds good. Straight pipes dual or single on a gas motor usually sound too raspy and crackle a lot. However if you leave the cat or cats in place and straight pipe off of that it sounds pretty good.

definately staright pipe my dad did a borla muffler and it was really quite unless you ran 2500 rpms then it sounded nice. but i would straight pipe it
night hawk im sure you probably dont care any more but my truck is pretty darn loud with a solid 3 inch and a single stainless 40 series that we got with a car that my dad baught. i have been told that it can be heard from 1/2 mile away in a house! i know it is bad to take a truck with 3 o2 sensors and that origanlly had 2 cats and a 2 1/4 inch exhaust that didnt back fire and make it back fire but it is worth it when my truck is idleing in the morning before school i walk back in the garage and the garage door is rattleing and shaking and i went to get a cup out of the cubboard a while back and i felt the vibrations through the wall. my girlfriend said that she can hear me coming from quite aways away granted the truck is cranking 4500-5000 but still i **** people off going down the freeway so y pipes arnt always bad
i bought a flowmaster tailpipe kit to exit behind the rear tire 3 inch for 70 bucks at jegs its a 4 piece weld up kit but im sure you can use the stainless band clamps if nessisary it takes a while to get the pipe tip to come out where you want it ive had mine off like 4 times because i didnt like where it was so if you do it make sure you take your time and you can always cut more off so line everything up just right. and that 3 inch pipe is heavy make sure you use some kind of good hanger
