I just bought a '96 F250 xl reg cab with a 5.8l motor. What is the max towing capacity for this truck?
I was told 6700 but that is low in my book. I know others who towed 9k with no problem with similiar yr and engine. I need to tow 3000 on a daily basis and once in a great while about 7500 to 9000. All my driving is low mileage
Also max payload for this truck would be helpful?
I did several searches and have found little to no info for towing and payload.
I looked at a 96 F150 with a 5.0, auto, 2wd, 3.55 rear and it was listed at 7,900 lbs. max towing. I would imagine yours would be significantly higher.
In comparison, my B4000 2wd is rated for 5,900 lbs.
The 1996 Ford Towing Guide shows:
with Auto Trans
F250 reg cab 3.55 gears GCVR 11,500, 4x2 max tow 6500, 4x4 max tow 6100
4.10 gears GCVR 13,000, 4x2 max tow 8000, 4x4 max tow 7600
Super Cab 3.55 4x2 = 6300 max tow, 4x4 max tow 5900
4.10 4x2 = 7800 max tow, 4x4 max tow 7400
Manual trans ratings are within 100lbs of auto

Do you know where I can find payload?
I'm surprised that the figures are that low. I wonder if it is more the brakes or how the build is. Really shows that the new trucks are much more capable to tow high loads.
Hi boxsky, welcome to FTE and thanks for joining us in the Towing forum!
If you don't have an owner's guide, you can calculate your payload capacity by subtracting your trucks unladen weight from the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR.) The GVWR will be found on a placard inside the driver side doorsill. The unladen weight may be found on your vehicle registration. Depending on your state.

.
They use the weakest point on the vehicle. wheather it is the tires, suspension, engine , clutch, etc. as their point of reference for their figures.
