Question receiver hitch needed?

i'm looking to set up for towing a boat weighing 1350 lbs + a trailer (not sure about the weight maybe around 800-1000 lbs).

do i need a receiver hitch or can i rely on the bumper alone? i don't want to mess up the bumper and of course want eveything safe...

You would have to look at the rating of the bumper on your truck, it should be stamped on it. The safest way would be to install a reciever style hitch, a class II would work fine for your needs.

Toyman

the bumper is stamped 200 lbs tongue weight / 2000 lbs gross trailer weight
so you can see why i'm asking the question... i'm sort of on the edge about this ...

I would just use the bumper if it was me.

Is this just a one time thing or is this boat something you will be towing a lot? If you are towing it a lot or for long distances it might be worthn it to get the hitch.

it would be used for local hauling mostly (1-5 miles only) but with the occasional longer run of say upto 300 miles roundtrip.

I would probably go for the hitch. It is the safer way and at the sametime it is there when you need it. Once you have a hitch, you'll always find something to tow with it. You will get a much more stableride with the hitch and receiver.

The really nice thing about a receiver hitch is the ability to buy a ball mount that'll level your trailer; if it's not level off the bumper you're kinda stuck.

Def. go for the receiver. I have video here of that 2000 lb. bumper hitch folded right down trying to move an empty car hauler around a yard.

It should be a little over $100 to get set up with a Class II, if you install it yourself.

thanks all, i think it's time to look at receiver hitches cause the trailers ride kind of low and the bumper is quite a bit higher so the trailer would not be level with the ground by any means.

97ranger its funny that you brought this one up. I also own a little ranger and I went with the receiver hitch. mostly because I've seen way too many rangers with the bumpers pulled down from being overloaded. Also if you have to hit the brakes in a hurry the bumper doesn't offer the same weight capability as the receiver hitch.

I'll try and get some pics of mine up this weekend.

Here's my .02 on the matter.
The receiver hitch offers good weight capacity and the option of different available heights for the hitch ball versus the bumper.
With the towing capacity, it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
I've seen quite a few smaller trucks with bent down bumpers now that I think about it.

Two other points, if you go to rent a trailer most rental companies are getting to where they will not rent to you unless you have a receiver type hitch. Also I would go ahead and put a class III on it for the little extra cash it's just that much better. My experience and $0.02.
